Our Flooring Expert On The Better Investment: Luxury Vinyl Plank Or Engineered Hardwood?

When selecting new flooring for a home, homeowners often face numerous options, with luxury vinyl plank (LVP) and engineered hardwood being two popular choices. LVP is constructed from six or more layers of material, offering benefits such as reduced bacteria growth, easy cleaning, and often, waterproofing. Engineered hardwood, while a more affordable alternative to solid hardwood, features a 100% natural wood top layer bonded to five or more layers of plywood, creating a durable surface. To determine which option offers a better investment, House Digest consulted Maud Swalens, senior marketing manager at COREtec. Swalens highlights several advantages of luxury vinyl planks and tiles over traditional hardwood floors, emphasizing durability, comfort, ease of cleaning, and simple, DIY-friendly installation. She points to COREtec's innovation in creating waterproof, kidproof, and petproof luxury vinyl floors as a solution to common challenges associated with other hard surface flooring types, including hardwood, laminate, tile, and stone. A key differentiator for luxury vinyl flooring is its superior waterproof capability. Swalens explains that COREtec luxury vinyl floors are genuinely waterproof, providing peace of mind for homeowners dealing with spills or pet accidents. In contrast, engineered hardwood and laminate floors are only water-resistant, meaning prolonged exposure to liquids and moisture can lead to irreversible damage like swelling, cupping, or cracking. This waterproof quality makes LVP particularly suitable for areas prone to moisture, such as bathrooms, kitchens, laundry rooms, and basements, where traditional wood floors would be at risk. Beyond water resistance, LVP offers additional benefits. Swalens notes that COREtec floors are designed to address consumer performance concerns, with certain styles providing deep scratch resistance, enhanced protection against dents and impacts, and improved comfort and quietness. Innovations like the pre-attached Soft Step underlayment, made from recycled materials, contribute to a floor that is significantly quieter and warmer than other luxury vinyl options. This evolution in flooring design responds to changing consumer needs, particularly in a post-COVID environment where homes serve multiple functions. From an aesthetic perspective, while hardwood floors offer a timeless look, luxury vinyl planks are continuously innovating. Modern printing and texturing techniques allow LVP to achieve hyper-realistic visuals that are often indistinguishable from real hardwood. This aesthetic appeal comes at a fraction of the cost, coupled with reduced cleaning demands and less stress over daily messes. Financially, LVP presents a savvy decision due to its ease and speed of installation. COREtec floors, for instance, feature an easy click-together system that requires no adhesive and minimal subfloor preparation, thanks to their rigid construction designed to conceal most subfloor imperfections. This DIY-friendly installation saves both time and money, minimizing disruption as floors can be purchased, installed, and used on the same day. LVP can even be installed over existing hard surfaces, eliminating the need for messy and costly demolitions. For those considering flooring options, comparing products from various manufacturers like COREtec is recommended to find the best fit for their space and functional requirements. #FlooringOptions #LuxuryVinylPlank #EngineeredHardwood #HomeImprovement #WaterproofFlooring #DIYInstallation #HomeDesign #Durability #CostEfficiency #FlooringOptions #LuxuryVinylPlank #EngineeredHardwood #HomeImprovement #WaterproofFlooring #DIYInstallation #HomeDesign #Durability #CostEfficiency
