Switchbot Curtain Rod 2 review: automated curtains without the hefty price tag

The Switchbot Curtain Rod 2 offers an accessible way to automate existing curtains, providing a touch of luxury to daily routines. This device retrofits onto curtain rods, transforming conventional curtains into smart ones that can be controlled via an app or smart assistants. It aims to replicate the experience of automated homes often seen in movies, where curtains open and close effortlessly. Installation and setup are generally straightforward, though the physical attachment to the curtain rod can be a bit fiddly. Users need to download the Switchbot app and create an account to operate the device. However, to unlock its full potential, including features like creating routines (e.g., opening at sunrise) and integrating with smart home ecosystems such as Alexa, Google Assistant, or Siri Shortcuts, an additional purchase of the Switchbot Hub Mini is necessary. Without the Hub Mini, the device functions primarily as a manually operated motor for curtains, offering limited smart functionality. The device is compatible with curtain rods with a diameter of 15-40mm and weighs 285g, with dimensions of 3.3 x 3 x 5.6 inches. The design of the Switchbot Curtain Rod 2 is described as chunky but efforts have been made to make it aesthetically pleasing, featuring a curved pill shape and curved metal hooks with plastic accents, available in black or white. While it may be visible with certain curtain styles like tab top or back tap, it can be completely hidden with grommet curtains. The two side pieces of the device can be removed and reattached, which aids in installation. The device's retrofit nature means it brings smart home capabilities at a fraction of the cost of a full smart curtain system, making its visibility a minor trade-off. Once installed and connected to the Switchbot Hub Mini, the app provides a smooth and intuitive user experience. Users can rename individual curtains, manually control their opening and closing from 0-100%, and set up routines based on various triggers like sunrise/sunset or specific timings. The app also displays the remaining battery life, and optional solar charging panels can be purchased to eliminate the need for manual recharging. A light-sensing feature is available for more accurate automation, though its effectiveness depends on the device's placement relative to the window. In testing, the device performed efficiently with only one reported failure over a week, and its motor operation was relatively quiet. In conclusion, the Switchbot Curtain Rod 2 successfully meets expectations for a retrofit smart home solution, simplifying a mundane household task. Although the necessity of purchasing the Hub Mini separately for full smart functionality is a drawback, the combined system works effectively. The device offers convenience, enhances the modern home aesthetic, and can also contribute to home security by creating the impression of occupancy. It is considered a valuable addition for households seeking to integrate smart technology without a complete overhaul of their existing curtain setup. #SmartHome #CurtainAutomation #SwitchbotCurtainRod2 #HomeAutomation #SmartDevices #HomeTech #ProductReview #SmartHome #CurtainAutomation #SwitchbotCurtainRod2 #HomeAutomation #SmartDevices #HomeTech #ProductReview
