SwitchBot Curtain 3 review: 3rd-gen curtain controller gets it right
The SwitchBot Curtain 3 represents the third generation of the company's smart curtain controllers, building upon its predecessors with significant enhancements, particularly in motor power and operational smoothness. This review focuses on the Rod model, designed for curtains with loops, grommets, hooks, rings, or clips that slide along a horizontal pole, including tension or decorative rods. SwitchBot also offers models for U-rail curtain rods and is developing one for I-rail rods.
While not a radical redesign from the second-generation product, the Curtain 3 features a slightly longer vertical dimension and a relocated USB-C charging port. The core mechanism remains consistent: two spring-loaded arms clip onto the curtain rod, and a central motor powers a roller that moves the device left and right. For double draperies that meet in the middle, two units are required. The device supports rods with diameters ranging from 15 to 40mm (.59 to 1.57 inches). A critical detail for extension rods is that the smaller half must not be more than 3.5mm (.14 inches) smaller than the larger half to ensure smooth transition.
Installation is straightforward, primarily involving snapping the device onto the curtain rod. However, some curtain types, such as tab-top and back-tab, may require adapters to prevent the Curtain 3 from snagging on the fabric. Grommet curtains might also necessitate plastic clip accessories, provided by SwitchBot, to ensure even operation. These clips, like the “beads fixer” attachment for grommet curtains, are easy to install but can slightly alter the aesthetic of the drapes. A new addition to the installation process is a small, flat magnet, embedded in a sticker, placed on the underside of the curtain rod. This magnet marks the desired stopping point for the curtain in its closed position, offering a more elegant solution than manual app calibration.
The Curtain 3 operates via Bluetooth and can be controlled through the SwitchBot mobile app when within range. To enable Wi-Fi connectivity and remote control, users need to integrate a SwitchBot Hub 2 ($70). Both the Curtain 3 and Hub 2 support Matter, a standard that facilitates broader smart home integration with various third-party products.
Performance is a key highlight of the Curtain 3, with its more powerful motor capable of moving up to 33 pounds, almost double the capacity of its predecessor. This increased torque ensures smooth and efficient operation even with heavy draperies. The device also supports a “kick-start” function, where a gentle pull on the drapes initiates the motor to complete the opening or closing action. A new feature, QuietDrift mode, replaces the earlier Silent Mode. This mode allows the motor to operate at an extremely slow speed (less than a foot per minute) and in complete silence. While the movement is almost imperceptible, the quiet operation is a significant benefit. The 3300mAh battery capacity remains unchanged from the Curtain 2, with an optional solar panel attachment ($26) available for continuous charging in sunlit environments.
The SwitchBot app has received modest upgrades, maintaining its familiar interface. Manual controls, including sliding a graphic to position the curtain or tapping “open” or “close,” are intuitive. The delay timer and automated schedules function effectively, though advanced automations tied to sunrise or sunset require the separate “Automation” tab and a SwitchBot hub. The SwitchBot Curtain 3, while not a revolutionary leap, refines a successful formula, with its enhanced power making it a worthwhile upgrade for automating window treatments.
