Hands-On with the SwitchBot Curtain 3
The SwitchBot Curtain 3, the third generation of SwitchBot's motorized curtain solution, offers an economical and easy-to-install method for automating existing curtains. Building on its predecessors, this new version introduces several key improvements aimed at enhancing user experience and performance. The device is designed to be largely hidden behind the curtain, and two units can be linked for center-opening curtain pairs.
Significant upgrades in the SwitchBot Curtain 3 include a reduction in operational noise. While the previous model produced 52dB, the Curtain 3 operates at 45dB. Furthermore, a new QuietDrift mode slows the curtain movement to approximately a quarter inch per second, reducing noise levels to a mere 25dB, comparable to a whisper. This feature is particularly beneficial for bedrooms or other areas where minimal noise is desired.
Battery life has also seen a substantial improvement. Laboratory tests indicate that the internal Lithium-ion battery can power the device for up to eight months with daily use (one open/close cycle). When paired with the separately sold SwitchBot Solar Panel 3, continuous power is maintained with only three hours of daily sun exposure, eliminating the need for manual recharging.
The motor's power has been doubled in the SwitchBot Curtain 3, allowing it to handle curtains weighing up to 36 pounds, significantly expanding its compatibility with heavier draperies. Despite these enhancements, the price of the SwitchBot Curtain 3 remains the same as its predecessor, the Curtain 2, making it a competitive option in the smart home market.
Compatibility is a strong point for the SwitchBot Curtain 3, as it is designed to adapt to 99% of curtain tracks globally, including various types of curtain rods, U Rails, and I Rails. Detailed compatibility information is available on the SwitchBot website.
Control options for the SwitchBot Curtain 3 are extensive. The primary method is through the SwitchBot app, which allows users to open/close curtains, set schedules, and create scenes. For remote control and advanced automations like time-based or sunrise/sunset triggers, the SwitchBot Hub 2 is required. The Hub 2 also enables voice control through Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant, and HomeKit integration via Matter compatibility. Other control methods include the SwitchBot Remote, SwitchBot NFC Tag, Touch & Go functionality (where a gentle tug initiates movement), Apple Watch control, and light-sensor control when paired with the SwitchBot Solar Panel 3. The device also integrates with IFTTT, SmartThings, and offers a free Crestron driver.
Installation of the SwitchBot Curtain 3, while claimed to be 30 seconds by SwitchBot, typically takes longer for first-time users. However, the process is well-documented and straightforward. The package includes all necessary components, such as the motor unit, hooks, charging cable, and various clips for different curtain types. A notable improvement is the inclusion of a self-adhesive magnet to mark the fully closed position, ensuring consistent closure, especially important for light-blocking in bedrooms. It is recommended to temporarily tape the magnet during initial setup to allow for fine adjustments before permanent adhesion. Software issues encountered during early testing were promptly resolved by SwitchBot, ensuring a smooth experience for the official release. The SwitchBot Curtain 3 consistently performs its open and close functions, offering a reliable and improved solution for curtain automation.
