SwitchBot Curtain Robot Version 2 review – A great product made even better!
The SwitchBot Curtain Robot Version 2 is a motorized device designed to automate the opening and closing of curtains. This review evaluates the updated model, building on the experience with its predecessor, which has been in daily use for over a year. The original version was generally well-received, with minor issues such as occasional recalibration needs if the curtains were tugged too abruptly. The updated "SwitchBot Curtain Rod 2" aims to address these minor shortcomings and enhance user experience.
The device measures 42 x 51 x 110mm and weighs 135g, featuring an ABS plastic housing available in white and black. It is powered by a USB-C 5-volt, 1-Amp connection, with a 3350mAh battery providing an estimated eight months of life based on two daily operations over a three-meter distance with an 8kg load. Connectivity is managed via Bluetooth 5.0 long range. The robot supports a maximum pull distance of 3 meters (9.8 feet) and a maximum load of 8kg (17 lbs). It includes internal ambient light and accelerometer sensors. Users can program up to five schedules within the SwitchBot app, with unlimited scheduling available through the optional SwitchBot Mini Hub. Voice control is supported through Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, Siri Shortcuts, SmartThings, IFTTT, and Clova (Japan), requiring the SwitchBot Hub for integration. A single robot is needed for single-sided curtains, while two are required for double-sided setups. An optional solar panel is available for charging.
The package includes the main robot body, curtain rod hooks, a USB-C charging cable, "fixer beads" for drawing curtains closed, curtain gripping clips, and a user manual. The robot's design features have been improved, particularly the rod-grabbing mechanism. The new design offers a tighter grip and wider top contact points, resulting in a more secure attachment to the curtain rod compared to the older model's ratcheting rods. The installation process involves first clamping a wheel assembly to the rod, then attaching the robot, which provides enhanced stability. The updated model also utilizes knurled rubber wheels for better traction, contrasting with the previous version's smooth wheels.
While the older model sometimes required a 'Curtain Grommet Kit' for heavy curtains, the Curtain Robot 2 often operates effectively without such enhancements, thanks to its improved power. For those desiring uniform pleats or with exceptionally heavy curtains, the included "Fixer Bead Kit" offers a straightforward solution. The optional solar panel, designed with a cord, allows for optimal positioning to capture sunlight, especially if the curtain tops are obstructed. However, environmental factors like window sheers can affect charging efficiency, necessitating manual charging approximately every eight months.
Setting up the robot involves adding it to the SwitchBot app, followed by a quick calibration process that defines open and closed positions. The app provides an intuitive interface with buttons for opening, closing, and pausing curtains. Advanced options include "Slider Control" for independent operation of double-sided curtains, and light sensor triggers to automate curtain movement based on ambient light conditions. The "Delay" function allows for timed operations, while "Schedule" enables routine automation. "Motion Mode" offers a choice between "Performance" and "Silent" operation. The robots can be integrated with other SwitchBot devices, such as the Thermometer Hygrometer and Remote Button, to create more complex automation scenarios, such as closing curtains in response to extreme temperatures to conserve energy. Voice control via platforms like Amazon Alexa further enhances convenience. Additional features in the app include "Touch and Go" for manual tug-triggered movement, an "Indicator Light" toggle, calibration settings, "Cloud Services" integration, NFC tag setup, activity logs, firmware and battery information, device details, and an ungrouping option. The overall enhancements in the SwitchBot Curtain Robot Version 2 improve its functionality and user convenience, making it a robust solution for home automation enthusiasts.
