This $99 gadget lets you voice-control your curtains - or even program to open automatically at sunrise
The SwitchBot Curtain Rod 2 is a second-generation IoT accessory designed to transform traditional curtains into smart, voice-controlled systems. This device, when paired with the existing SwitchBot Curtain unit, enables users to open or close their curtains via voice commands or a smartphone application. The innovative design of the Rod 2 allows it to be retrofitted onto virtually any curtain rod, enhancing compatibility and ease of installation in various home settings.
Developed by Wonder Tech Lab, the SwitchBot Curtain system has garnered significant recognition since its debut in 2019, successfully raising nearly $1.5 million on Kickstarter. It has also received design accolades, including the Red Dot Design Award in 2022 and the Good Design Award in 2020, in addition to being a finalist at the IDEA 2020 awards. These achievements underscore its appeal and innovative approach to home automation.
The Rod 2 accessory introduces an all-new DynamiClamp design, specifically engineered to prevent the SwitchBot Curtain from getting stuck during operation. This improved design features larger wheels, 1.6 times the size of its predecessor, drawing inspiration from off-road vehicle mechanics to navigate telescopic curtain rods effortlessly. A new independent flexible suspension system further enhances its ability to smoothly traverse the small steps or junctions often found in adjustable curtain rods, ensuring consistent performance.
Compatibility is a key feature, as the SwitchBot Curtain, along with the Rod 2, is designed to work with 99% of curtain types and various rod/rail configurations, including Back Tap, Grommet, Tab Top, and Ring Top curtains. Installation is straightforward, taking only a few seconds. Despite its compact size, the device boasts considerable power, capable of handling curtains weighing up to 8 kilograms (approximately 17 pounds).
Energy efficiency is another notable aspect of the SwitchBot Curtain. It is equipped with a 3350 mAh battery that provides up to eight months of operation on a single charge. For continuous power without the need for manual recharging, an optional solar panel add-on is available, allowing the device to remain charged indefinitely using ambient light. This smart gadget aims to streamline daily routines by automating tasks such as adjusting curtains based on the time of day, sunlight levels, or specific events like video calls or movie watching, making the home environment more responsive and convenient.
