Smarten your remote-controlled fan with this small device
The Bond is a $99 disc designed to integrate remote-controlled ceiling fans with smart home platforms such as Amazon Alexa and Google Home, effectively eliminating the need for a physical remote. This small black disc also enables users to control their ceiling fans via a mobile remote within the Bond app. To set up the Bond, users first connect to the Bond Wi-Fi network and then return to the app to connect to their home's Wi-Fi. A single Bond unit can manage up to six ceiling fans simultaneously, with each fan displayed on the app's home screen for easy control.
To establish the mobile remote, users must pair their ceiling fan's existing remote with the Bond by following in-app instructions. This involves pairing each function button on the fan's remote with the Bond device. Once all button functions are paired and tested, the Bond app serves as a comprehensive remote control for the ceiling fan. The device is compatible with both infrared (IR) and radio frequency (RF) remote controls, although most ceiling fan remotes typically use RF technology. For IR remotes, a clear line of sight between the Bond and the original remote is necessary for successful pairing.
Beyond app control, the Bond offers voice command capabilities through its integration with Amazon Alexa and Google Home. Users can enable the Bond skill for Alexa to issue commands like "Alexa, turn on the basement fan." Similarly, by selecting Bond Smart Home under the Home Control tab in Google Home and logging into their Bond account, users can link the two services and use Google voice commands such as "OK, Google, turn on the basement fan." The Bond device itself is a compact, round puck available only in black, featuring a power cable at the rear and an LED light ring on top that indicates connection and pairing status.
Currently, the Bond is exclusively compatible with remote-controlled ceiling fans. However, its parent company, Olibra, has indicated plans to expand the device's compatibility to include several other types of common household devices in the near future, with evidence of these future capabilities already visible within the current Bond app version.
