Look inside a sustainable home with award-winning eco credentials

This blog post showcases an award-winning sustainable home built by DLE Construction Limited, recipients of the Sustainability Award at the 2023 Master Builder of the Year Awards. The project, located in the green belt of West Yorkshire near Halifax, exemplifies environmentally conscious building practices and integrates advanced sustainable technologies. The homeowners aimed to create an eco-friendly, detached family home while preserving the surrounding environment, resulting in a future-ready residence that promotes a greener lifestyle. The article details various sustainable features incorporated into the home's design and construction. Key aspects include maximizing solar gains through strategic window placement on the south-facing side of the plot to leverage natural light and heat, complemented by awnings or overhangs to prevent overheating. Extensive insulation in walls, floors, and roofs ensures maximum heat retention, significantly enhancing energy efficiency. The property is equipped with Velfac triple-glazed windows, which are shown to be 40-50% more efficient than A-rated double-glazed windows, justifying the higher initial investment. To address ventilation in an airtight structure, a Mechanical Ventilation Heat Recovery (MVHR) system was installed. This system provides continuous fresh, filtered air while minimizing energy loss, effectively preventing condensation, damp, and mold. The home also utilizes thermal solar panels, which generate heat rather than electricity, connected to the MVHR system to power underfloor heating. Further renewable energy integration includes an air source heat pump and solar photovoltaic (PV) panels, supported by a battery storage system. This battery not only ensures energy supply on less sunny days but also allows for selling surplus power back to the National Grid through schemes like the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG). Beyond energy generation and conservation, the property incorporates a rainwater harvesting system. This system collects and stores rainwater for non-potable uses such as washing machines and toilets, reducing reliance on mains water and leading to significant cost savings for metered properties, alongside its environmental benefits. The clients also designed their garden for self-sufficiency, featuring a spacious south-facing greenhouse and a large walled vegetable garden to cultivate home-grown food. The construction process itself adhered to sustainable practices. DLE Construction Limited prioritized re-using materials whenever possible; for instance, all excavation waste was retained on-site for landscaping, offering both environmental advantages and cost savings. Construction waste, including packaging, plastics, wood, and metals, was meticulously separated and recycled at local facilities. To minimize the carbon footprint associated with transportation, building materials, such as the stone for the home, were sourced from a local quarry, and the team consistently used local suppliers for all other materials. The success of this complex build was attributed to effective communication among the owners, builders, and architect. Despite design changes, open dialogue and regular meetings ensured all parties were aligned on the project's vision, budget, and execution. The close working relationship fostered a collaborative environment, allowing for creative solutions to challenges and ultimately delivering a home that perfectly matched the clients' aspirations and high standards. The article concludes by encouraging readers interested in energy efficiency and renewable products to explore available guides and to seek out vetted, high-quality builders for their own projects. #SustainableHome #EcoFriendlyBuild #MasterBuilderAwards #RenewableEnergy #EnergyEfficiency #RainwaterHarvesting #SolarPanels #HeatPumps #TripleGlazing #SustainableHome #EcoFriendlyBuild #MasterBuilderAwards #RenewableEnergy #EnergyEfficiency #RainwaterHarvesting #SolarPanels #HeatPumps #TripleGlazing
