Kitchen focus – Why integrated seating is a growing design trend
The article explores the increasing popularity of integrated banquette seating in kitchen design, a trend driven by evolving homeowner lifestyles and preferences for multi-functional and comfortable spaces. Peter Humphrey, design director and founder of Humphrey Munson, highlights the inherent comfort and convivial atmosphere created by banquette seating, likening it to a preferred booth in a restaurant setting. He emphasizes its role in enhancing the 'living' aspect of a kitchen.
Lifestyle changes are a significant factor in this trend. Mark Hassett, a designer at Sheraton Interiors, notes a shift towards integrated, multi-functional spaces, particularly with banquette seating incorporated into kitchen island configurations. This preference is linked to the rise in at-home dining and entertaining, especially since the pandemic, making versatile kitchen designs more appealing.
Tim Higham, MD of Higham Furniture, confirms that his company receives more requests for banquette seating in Shaker kitchens, attributing this to increased home dining and entertaining, as well as the work-from-home trend that necessitates kitchens serving as beautiful, multifunctional areas. Cassie Jones, brand manager at Masterclass Kitchens, adds that customers seek comfort and versatility to accommodate family members and guests of all ages. She points to changing family structures, an increase in multi-generational living, and a desire for comfort, functionality, and togetherness as key drivers.
Sinead Trainor, kitchen category manager at LochAnna Kitchens, also connects the trend to the rise of multi-generational family homes, noting that this seating style promotes togetherness and integrates seamlessly with kitchen islands to provide comfortable, stylish, and space-saving dining solutions. Simon Taylor, MD of Simon Taylor Furniture, has observed and implemented numerous banquette designs attached to islands, emphasizing their ability to create a sociable dining and entertaining space at the heart of the kitchen while optimizing space by often including drawers for additional storage.
Regarding design variations, Mark Hassett of Sheraton Interiors mentions the popularity of U-shaped and L-shaped banquettes for their space efficiency. Richard Davenport, MD at Davonport, indicates a growing demand for curved designs, which he says provide a more informal seating area and an unexpected visual element. Sophie Hartley, sales designer at Tom Howley’s Tunbridge Wells showroom, echoes this, stating that curved banquette seating increases available seating and encourages a more 'conversational' arrangement.
The article also addresses whether island banquettes are replacing informal breakfast-bar style seating. Richard Davonport suggests that banquette seating is indeed starting to replace breakfast areas due to its superior comfort. However, Tom Howley, creative design director at Tom Howley, believes it serves as an addition to bar seating, offering both formal and informal dining options. Peter Humphrey of Humphrey Munson concurs, viewing banquette seating as a timeless choice for those desiring a more intimate dining ambiance, coexisting harmoniously with informal counter stools for different purposes within the kitchen space.
