Before You Splurge on Backsplash Tile, Consider This Clever Hack
Renovating a kitchen often involves selecting a backsplash, a process that can be complicated by the high cost of desired tiles. Many homeowners find themselves in a dilemma when they discover their dream backsplash tiles are outside their budget. This article presents a practical solution for this common renovation challenge, inspired by Claire Thomas, cofounder of Sweet Laurel Bakery.
Thomas faced a similar situation when designing the kitchen for her Big Bear, California, cabin. While she initially envisioned a full-white kitchen, she decided to incorporate a more adventurous and unexpected element. The opportunity arose from an accidental overestimation of tiles for a fireplace platform in the living room. She ended up with a surplus of Fireclay's Harvest style tiles, a custom colorway from their Agrarian collection, which are priced at $30 per piece. Covering all three kitchen walls with these tiles would have significantly exceeded her budget.
Instead of abandoning the idea of using the unique tiles, Thomas ingeniously reallocated them. She opted to install the high-end, statement tiles only in the prominent area behind the cooktop. For the remaining kitchen walls, she used simple, cost-effective white subway tiles. This strategic placement allowed her to incorporate the striking aesthetic of the expensive tiles without incurring the full cost of a complete installation.
The chosen tiles featured groovy avocado green and sorbet pink half-moons, perfectly aligning with the “1960s ski party” theme Thomas aimed for. The circular patterns of these tiles also served a functional design purpose, introducing curves that visually break up the numerous straight lines present in the wood-heavy room, thereby making the space less visually cluttered. This approach demonstrates how a small, impactful application of a high-design element can achieve a desired aesthetic without requiring a large financial outlay.
This method offers a valuable lesson for anyone facing budget constraints in kitchen renovation: a small, deliberate application of a special tile can create a significant visual impact. Instead of completely abandoning an expensive tile choice, homeowners can use it as a focal point or accent, complementing it with more affordable options for the majority of the surface. This compromise allows for the integration of unique design elements while adhering to financial limits, proving that a "small pop of color is much better than none at all."
