This DIY Backsplash Is Even More Renter-Friendly Than Peel-and-Stick
Alexandra Gater, a renovator known for transforming tiny rental apartments in Toronto, showcases a new renter-friendly backsplash solution called Click’n Tile. Gater, who frequently uses peel-and-stick backsplash tiles in her projects and even in her own kitchen, highlights a common limitation: peel-and-stick tiles are not suitable for all wall types, particularly drywall, where they may not adhere effectively.
For a 70-square-foot kitchen update, Gater opted for Click’n Tile from Click Deco, a product she had not previously used. These tiles are designed to lock onto a panel, similar to LEGOs, offering a less abrasive backing than traditional adhesive tiles. This makes them an ideal alternative for renters, as the backing utilizes a strong double-sided tape that is easier to remove without damaging surfaces. Gater also notes the versatility of Click’n Tile, explaining that it can be installed with construction adhesive for a more permanent application if desired.
The installation process involved first affixing mounting plates to the wall, followed by snapping the rectangular tile pieces into place. While most tiles were easy to install, the project required significant cutting for pieces along the bottom edge, around wall cabinets, and near outlets. Gater and her team used a table saw for these precise cuts, and the entire backsplash installation took approximately six hours to complete.
Despite the time-consuming cutting involved for this specific kitchen layout, Gater expressed enthusiasm for using Click’n Tile again, particularly for unobstructed walls where fewer cuts would be necessary. She also noted that if she were to undertake the project again, she would consider tiling only halfway up the wall to reduce both labor and material costs. The product is relatively affordable, priced at $36 for a box of 24 tiles, making it a cost-effective option, especially since the tiles can be removed and reused when moving.
The total product cost for covering the entire kitchen wall in this project was estimated at around $1,500. A key advantage of Click Deco’s system is its flexibility; users can easily swap out the tiles for different patterns or colors, allowing for easy updates and personalization without a full renovation. This makes Click’n Tile a highly adaptable and renter-friendly solution for updating kitchen aesthetics.
