Domino Executive Creative Director Kate Berry’s DIY Backsplash Is Totally Rental-Friendly

For individuals residing in rented spaces, particularly in competitive real estate markets, interior design choices often involve compromises. Kate Berry, Executive Creative Director at Domino, encountered this challenge in her New York City apartment, where she inherited a green-tiled kitchen backsplash that did not align with her aesthetic preferences. Rather than undertaking costly and permanent renovations, Berry devised an ingenious, budget-friendly, and rental-friendly solution: a DIY wallpapered backsplash. The project involved covering the existing backsplash with a custom-designed, removable wallpaper system. Berry's method centered on creating panels using medium-density fiberboard (MDF) and clear glass. The first step entailed precisely cutting three rectangular pieces of MDF and glass to fit the dimensions of her kitchen backsplash. She noted the importance of accurate measurements and suggested using glass over Plexiglass, especially near a stove, to prevent warping from heat. Berry collaborated with artist Nathaniel Wojtalik for assistance, though local hardware stores can also provide cutting services. Following the preparation of the panels, Berry applied a chosen wallpaper, specifically Jardin D’Osier wallpaper by Hermès, to the MDF using spray-mount adhesive. Careful alignment was crucial to ensure the pattern flowed seamlessly across the panels, and an X-Acto knife was used to achieve clean, straight edges. Once the wallpaper was affixed to the MDF, the panels were ready for installation. The installation process involved applying clear silicone to the back of the wallpapered MDF boards before adhering them to the existing backsplash. Subsequently, the pre-cut clear glass panels were placed over the wallpapered boards, and more silicone was applied around their edges to secure them. Berry emphasized smoothing the silicone with a finger to ensure full adhesion and a polished finish. After installation, the silicone required a full 24 hours to cure and set, during which Berry used household items like cutting boards and books to hold the panels firmly in place. Upon completion, the kitchen was transformed with a personalized and visually appealing backsplash that incorporated Berry's love for floral and fauna motifs. The project's most significant advantage for renters is its reversibility. Berry confirmed that the panels could be easily removed by peeling off the silicone, allowing tenants to customize their living spaces without incurring penalties or damage when moving out. This DIY approach offers a practical and stylish alternative for enhancing rental kitchens without permanent alteration or significant financial investment. #DIYHomeDecor #RentalFriendly #KitchenRenovation #WallpaperBacksplash #InteriorDesign #BudgetDecor #HomeImprovement #CreativeSolutions #KateBerry #DIYHomeDecor #RentalFriendly #KitchenRenovation #WallpaperBacksplash #InteriorDesign #BudgetDecor #HomeImprovement #CreativeSolutions #KateBerry
