Three former Kimley-Horn interns, now full-time employees—Autumn McNinch, Katherine Herrera-Lai, and Maryam Abutabikh—have received national recognition for their landscape architecture projects, each focused on community betterment. Autumn McNinch, while a senior at Purdue University, collaborated with her professor and classmates to create a children's book and board game. This project aimed to educate children and their parents about Indiana's native plants and habitats, thereby introducing them to landscape architecture at an early age. The project, titled “Children’s Book and Learning Games on Indiana Native Plants & Habitats,” earned Autumn and her group the 2023 ASLA Student Honor Award in Communications. Autumn's experience in Kimley-Horn's co-op program allowed her to engage with various teams and projects, providing broad exposure to the field. As a landscape architecture analyst, she continues to apply her passion for community engagement through master plans, community boards, and public workshops, valuing the blend of cultural, communal, technical, and artistic aspects of her work. Katherine Herrera-Lai's master’s report at Kansas State University resulted in a set of design guidelines for equitable public spaces and artwork. Yuan Architects has completed 'Lan Villa,' a residential project situated in Taiwan's mountainous Xindian district, designed to reflect and integrate with its natural surroundings. The core concept of the villa emphasizes flexibility and freedom in occupying its spaces. A prominent feature of the design is a dramatically curved wall located at the center of the structure. This wall serves a dual purpose: it visually corresponds with the panoramic mountain views visible through the building's extensive floor-to-ceiling glazing, and it acts as an interface that captures and reflects the changing light and colors of the outdoor landscape into the living areas throughout the day and across seasons. The ground floor of 'Lan Villa' is dedicated to communal living, featuring a light-filled open-plan kitchen and dining area that extends onto an adjoining outdoor deck.
