Green Wall Ferrara
The Green Wall Ferrara project involved the conversion of a garden space within the courtyard of a private estate located in the city center of Ferrara, Italy. The renovation addressed the challenge of a small internal garden featuring tall, old boundary walls, which offered limited room for a conventional ground-level garden. To maximize the utility of the available space, the horizontal area was designated for recreation, leaving restricted zones for traditional planting. Consequently, the decision was made to implement a garden on the existing walls.
The Optigreen Wall Garden system was selected and installed to create a vertical garden. This system successfully transformed the constrained courtyard into an aesthetically pleasing and tranquil environment. A deliberate choice was made not to cover the old boundary walls entirely with vegetation, allowing specific brick architectural elements to remain visible and be appreciated by the homeowners. This approach integrated the historical character of the property with the new green features.
Approximately 3,000 plants, encompassing around 50 different species, were incorporated into the private Green Wall Ferrara. The vertical garden measures 5 meters in height and covers a total area of 120 square meters (approximately 1,291 square feet). The entire construction process was completed within three weeks.
The “Wall Garden” system employed is a façade-mounted greening system that utilizes a substrate base. Its core component is a high-grade aluminum cassette system, pre-filled with substrate, which can be planted on-site. Horizontal suspension rails are used to support these Wall Garden elements, which are securely hooked into place. The system includes a fully automatic irrigation setup, integrated with a blending unit for the precise application of fertilizer and herbicides. This ensures the consistent health and maintenance of the diverse plant life.
The project, completed in 2009, was a private residential undertaking. Optigreen Wall Garden, a product of OPTIGRÜN International AG, served as the green façade system, with Optigreen Italia, Srl. acting as the supplier. Installation was carried out by Climagrén GmbH. The project highlights an innovative solution for integrating greenery into urban residential settings with spatial constraints, demonstrating how vertical gardening can enhance both the aesthetic and functional aspects of a private courtyard.
