Hotel Ush?aia Low-Tech Vertical Garden
The Hotel Ushüaia, located in Playa d’En Bossa, Ibiza, Spain, features a low-tech vertical garden system developed by Urbanarbolismo in collaboration with Alijardín and Alicante Forestal. Completed in May 2011, this innovative greenwall system serves as a sound barrier between the hotel’s open-air disco in the central courtyard and adjacent guest rooms, enhancing both acoustics and aesthetics. The project is notable for its eco.bin greenwall system, which employs four panels of interconnected ceramic terracotta containers.
Each ceramic container within the eco.bin system is individually filled with a growing medium and planted with suitable vegetation. The design allows for slight interior inclination to optimize water absorption from irrigation lines, with each planting hole sealed at the back to store water. This modular approach ensures that each plant unit has its own substrate and water supply, collectively forming a sound-absorbent and visually appealing garden space. The irrigation system combines drip and hand irrigation methods, tailored to the varying water needs of plants in different orientations. The inherent porosity of the ceramic containers facilitates humidity exchange, contributing to a stable microclimate for the plants.
This vertical garden stands out as the first of its kind globally, particularly due to its low-tech design and choice of plant species. The designers carefully selected succulents such as crassula, euphorbia, echeveria, aeonium, kalanchoe, sedum, and sedeveria. These species are well-suited to the Mediterranean climate of Ibiza, thriving in conditions with minimal substrate, similar to their natural habitats on vertical surfaces. Their resilience and diverse colors provide year-round visual interest.
The low-tech nature of this vertical garden system differentiates it from more complex, automated vertical gardening solutions. It requires minimal water and maintenance, making it a practical option for various applications, including residential settings. The system allows for easy plant substitution without requiring extensive horticultural knowledge from the owners. While it necessitates a more personalized maintenance regimen compared to highly automated systems, its simplicity and accessibility expand the possibility of integrating vertical gardens into broader architectural and design contexts. The primary vertical garden extends to surround the terraces of one of the hotel's restaurants, further enhancing acoustic insulation and creating a more comfortable and intimate dining environment.
