An Under-$500 Bathroom Upgrade Starring Humidity-Proof Paint
This article details a highly budget-conscious bathroom renovation project undertaken by first-time homeowner and Virgo, Nicole Christopher, in her tiny Hardwick, Vermont home. Faced with a 42-square-foot bathroom that was in dire need of an update but lacking the time and budget for a full gut renovation, Christopher embarked on a meticulous DIY transformation for under $500. Her approach focused on painting existing fixtures and surfaces, coupled with strategic purchases from Amazon and other affordable retailers.
One of the primary cost-saving strategies involved faking matte black fixtures. Instead of replacing the existing chrome pieces like the window crank, shower-temperature knobs, light switch plate, and toilet handle, Christopher used durable enamel spray paint to give them a modern matte black finish. She noted that while not a permanent solution, it has held up well. For intricate metal parts, she transferred the spray paint to a bag for precise brush application. The only new matte black fixture was an affordable showerhead from Amazon, chosen after careful review of customer-submitted photos to ensure quality and appearance.
Another significant aspect of the renovation was the application of waterproof paint to the shower walls. Christopher encountered a shower area made of a composite, faux tile, and paperboard surface that, despite its appearance, was watertight. She chose to paint directly over these walls using Benjamin Moore’s Atrium White in their Bath and Spa finish, a product specifically designed for high-humidity environments. This choice provided a fresh, creamy white look without yellow undertones. For the surrounding paneling and built-ins, she used Benjamin Moore’s Vintage Vogue green, demonstrating meticulous attention to detail in covering all nooks and crannies.
The renovation also addressed the dingy tub, which had been previously painted an almond hue that was largely worn off. Christopher opted to scrape away the remaining paint to reveal the white enamel underneath. This was a time-consuming task, but it improved the tub's appearance sufficiently until a future re-enameling could be considered. The vanity cabinet received a fresh coat of the same Vintage Vogue green paint, complementing a new sink faucet from Amazon. Other Amazon scores included a wall sconce (the only item for which a professional was hired for installation) and towel hooks, again selected based on positive customer reviews with visual evidence.
For additional storage and aesthetic appeal, Christopher found a mirror at Home Goods for $40. When floating shelves from the same retailer proved unsuitable, she created her own using light wood boards and black brackets from Target. The ceiling, originally a plain surface, was transformed with peel-and-stick faux shiplap wallpaper from Target, carefully cut to fit around the ceiling fan and air vent. This detailed, hands-on approach allowed Christopher to completely revitalize her small bathroom within a very tight budget, showcasing how creativity and careful planning can lead to significant home improvements.
