This stunning bathroom makeover cost only $550 using self-stick vinyl floor tiles
This article details a budget-friendly bathroom renovation undertaken by writer and editor Alexis Teasdale, who transformed her outdated bathroom for just $550. Faced with the challenge of renovating with three young children, Teasdale opted for a less invasive and more cost-effective approach than a full gut renovation. Her goal was to brighten the bathroom, which previously featured a dark 90s style blended with country-cottage elements, and make it more appealing for guests. The key to this transformation was the use of self-stick vinyl floor tiles, which she discovered online and sourced locally from Bunnings after finding international shipping costs prohibitive for similar products.
The renovation primarily focused on cosmetic changes that significantly altered the room's aesthetic. The process began with a thorough cleaning of the existing bathroom surfaces using sugar soap and mould remover, followed by rinsing and drying. Teasdale then meticulously taped off the edges and applied three coats of Dulux paint in 'Snow Season' to the walls and existing tiles, using a roller brush for an even finish. During this painting phase, fixtures such as the bathroom mirror cabinet, towel rails, and toilet roll holder were removed to facilitate a neater application.
After the paint dried completely, the self-stick vinyl tiles were laid on the floor. Teasdale, who had no prior experience with vinyl tile installation or tile painting, found the process to be simpler than anticipated. The tiles feature pre-applied, flooring-grade adhesive, requiring only the backing to be peeled off before sticking them down. Waterproof sealer was applied around the bathroom's edges and in any cracks to ensure the tiles remained flat and to prevent water infiltration underneath.
Following the floor installation, all existing handles were replaced with matte black versions to complement the new, brighter aesthetic. A new Kmart arch mirror was hung on the wall, and the space was styled with plants and various trinkets, including Kmart arch shelves and accessories, and Big W hand towels. The total budget for the makeover was meticulously tracked, with costs including $80 for Dulux paint, $96 for a box of 16 Bunnings Winton adhesive vinyl tiles, $28.30 for a pack of four Lane Black Hampton door handles, $15.05 for a Bunnings Ikonic door knob, $24.03 for a Mondella towel ring, $18.92 for a toilet roll holder, $40 for the Kmart arch mirror, $19 each for Kmart arch shelves, $10 for Kmart accessories, $4 for Big W hand towels, and approximately $40 for miscellaneous items like waterproof sealer and paint rollers.
The entire project took approximately one week to complete, largely due to paint drying times. The most challenging aspect of the renovation was cutting the vinyl tiles to fit around the various skirting boards and irregular shapes in the bathroom. Despite the tiles being easy to cut with strong scissors, achieving the correct shapes required precision and effort. Teasdale expressed her satisfaction with the outcome, highlighting how the bathroom now feels cleaner, fresher, and more enjoyable.
