DIY bathroom makeover for $500 uses shiplap and peel-and-stick tiles
Emily Rodgers, a homeowner from Dayton, Ohio, successfully renovated her outdated and dull bathroom on a limited budget, showcasing a do-it-yourself approach to home improvement. Having recently completed a kitchen renovation, Rodgers sought cost-effective solutions for her bathroom. Her initial plan involved painting existing linoleum floor tiles with a stencil, but she discovered marble look-alike peel-and-stick tiles at a home improvement store. She was impressed by the quality of these tiles, noting their matte finish and irregular marble veining. The installation process was straightforward, with the most challenging aspect being cutting around the toilet. Rodgers mentioned the possibility of using grout between the tiles for a more realistic appearance and plans to keep them for a while, depending on their durability.
For the walls, Rodgers replaced the old square subway tiles with shiplap. She had previous experience with shiplap from her kitchen renovation and appreciated its affordability and ease of use. The choice of a green paint color for the walls helped unify the new design elements. Other significant updates included removing the old vanity and installing a new one, adding a new pendant light fixture, and hanging a new mirror.
Most of the project, including the demolition, shiplap installation, painting, and floor installation, was completed over a single weekend. The sourcing of the mirror and light fixture extended the overall timeline by a couple of weeks. The entire renovation, encompassing all materials and fixtures, cost approximately $500, with the new vanity accounting for a substantial portion of this expense. Rodgers emphasized the personal satisfaction derived from undertaking these renovations herself, stating that she handles all her home makeovers and feels immense pride in each project. Her work and other projects are documented on her Instagram account, @mylushabode.
