The Home Union Founders Retiled Their Bland Bathroom in Less Than a Week
The founders of Home Union, Meghan Lavery and Daniel King, transformed their generic bathroom in their Williamsburg, Brooklyn, apartment by covering the walls in a vibrant array of simple ceramic tiles. This small-scale rental renovation was inspired by a surplus of tiles from their previous store, and their desire to inject bold color and personality into an otherwise bland space. They viewed the bathroom's compact size as an opportunity for extreme design, noting its potential for memorable selfies.
The couple approached the tiling process with a relaxed attitude, laying out the affordable ceramic tiles in a random fashion to avoid overthinking the design. Their primary advice for anyone undertaking a similar DIY project is to meticulously prepare the workspace for easy cleanup, ensuring all tools and tiles are readily accessible. For floor tiling, they emphasized the importance of using kneepads. The entire project was completed in approximately 35 hours, spread over a week.
The renovation involved a few key supplies: ceramic tiles, thin-set mortar, grout, a notched trowel, a grout float, a tile cutter, a grout sponge, drop cloths, and tile spacers. The first step, establishing the foundation, involved spreading a layer of thin-set mortar with a notched trowel and then setting the tiles one by one according to their chosen random pattern, ensuring proper adhesion and placing spacers between each tile. This process was repeated until the main area was filled, with awkward corner spaces addressed last by custom-cutting tiles as needed. After filling the entire space, the tiles were left to dry overnight.
On the following morning, the tile spacers were removed, and the grouting process began. Grout was pushed into all crevices using a grout float, and excess was scraped away until the entire surface was covered. The final step, cleaning, involved using a wet grout sponge to vigorously wipe away any residue from the tiles, repeating as necessary until the surface was clean. This detailed, step-by-step approach allowed Lavery and King to achieve a significant bathroom transformation in a short period, demonstrating that impactful changes can be made even in small rental spaces with readily available materials.
