An ’80s Bathroom with “Yellow Undertones” Gets the Most Stunning Makeover

This blog post details a comprehensive bathroom renovation project undertaken by homeowner Candice Shah, who aimed to transform her outdated 1980s bathroom. The original bathroom featured cream-colored walls with yellow undertones, a wooden vanity, and an old-fashioned shower with a tub, which Shah described as feeling very outdated and in need of a complete transformation as it was original to when the condo was built. Despite the desire for a significant change, Shah opted to maintain the existing layout of the bathroom, which she found functional and appealing. The renovation began with the demolition of the old fixtures, including the tub and shower, with assistance from a contractor, Romeo Aguilar. Shah decided to replace the tub with a stall shower, moving away from the previous setup. This change, along with the replacement of the old toilet with a newer KOHLER model, marked the initial steps toward modernization. To introduce a fresh aesthetic, Shah incorporated modern design elements. She chose black and white checkered Merola tiles for the flooring, creating a classic yet contemporary foundation. For the shower area, she installed blue MOLOVO picket tiles vertically, extending the colorful backsplash all the way to the ceiling, which added a vibrant touch. Brass accents were strategically integrated throughout the space, complementing the new Delta bronze showerhead and enhancing the modern feel. A clear shower door from The Glass Warehouse was installed, allowing the new tiles and fixtures to be prominently displayed. For the walls, Shah selected Benjamin Moore’s Chantilly Lace, a white paint color, which brightened the space and provided a neutral backdrop for the other design elements. A new white vanity from Amazon was chosen for its ample storage, addressing practical needs while fitting into the updated aesthetic. Interestingly, not all original elements were discarded; Shah thoughtfully retained and reinstalled the original mirror and sconces, integrating them into the new design. This approach resulted in a renovated bathroom that felt new and modern yet retained a sense of being lived-in and comfortable, avoiding a sterile appearance. The renovation project was not without its challenges. Shah encountered a significant setback when a leaking old pipe needed to be replaced, causing delays in the installation process. This experience highlighted the importance of thorough research, particularly regarding design and material sourcing, and the necessity of budgeting for unforeseen issues. Despite the delay and a total project cost of approximately $6,000, Shah emphasized the value of patience in a full gut renovation. Once the plumbing issues were resolved, the installation of the floor tiles, backsplash, toilet, vanity, and shower proceeded smoothly, culminating in a cozy and functional new bathroom that has been particularly well-received by guests. #BathroomRenovation #HomeMakeover #InteriorDesign #DIYProject #ModernDesign #BeforeAndAfter #TileWork #HomeImprovement #BathroomRenovation #HomeMakeover #InteriorDesign #DIYProject #ModernDesign #BeforeAndAfter #TileWork #HomeImprovement
