At Home: Doing bathroom upgrades on a budget
Renovating a bathroom does not always require a complete overhaul involving demolition and extensive reconstruction. There are numerous budget-friendly strategies to refresh its appearance and functionality. Interior designer Brandi Bryan from Carpet One Floor & Home, who has over five years of experience and is currently designing the upstairs bedroom suite's bathroom for this year’s Designer Showhouse, offers ten practical and cost-effective tips for updating a bathroom.
One effective approach is to decorate by displaying guest items. Utilizing attractive guest towels, neatly folded on a wall shelf or rolled in a basket, and filling glass apothecary jars with travel-sized toiletries, not only adds decorative flair but also serves a practical purpose, making guests feel more welcome. Instead of expensive artwork, investing in wall organization can be highly beneficial. Installing shelves and filling them with decorative baskets, bins, or jars for storing towels, toilet paper, and other bathroom essentials can replace the need for costly decor while freeing up valuable storage space in linen closets and cabinets.
Replacing a generic bathroom mirror with a decorative one is another simple yet impactful change. New, stylish mirrors are readily available at home decor stores, or an antique mirror can be purchased and refinished. This creates an interesting focal point and enhances the room's aesthetic appeal. For dated laminate vanity countertops, repainting with specialized products can give them a contemporary look. It is crucial to research and follow product instructions carefully to ensure durability. Similarly, products are available for updating ceramic tiles and grout.
Adding a four-inch high decorative tile backsplash behind the vanity can significantly elevate the bathroom's visual appeal. Tiles are often sold in 12-inch by 12-inch sheets, with each sheet covering three linear feet. Inexpensive options can be found at places like Habitat for Humanity ReStore, which offers discounted discontinued or leftover tiles from building centers and contractors. As an alternative to tile, installing four-foot-high beadboard or faux wainscoting can provide a complete and finished look for walls. This option is generally easier and less expensive to install, with online instructional videos and home center sales associates available to guide the process and recommend appropriate products for bathroom installations.
Updating bathroom fixtures and hardware is a straightforward way to modernize the space. New faucets, lighting, cabinet pulls, and towel racks can instantly transform the bathroom's style. Bryan suggests oil-rubbed bronze finishes for a traditional look and brushed nickel for a more contemporary feel, emphasizing the ease of finding cost-effective products. If the existing vanity is too small or lacks storage, updating it is recommended. This can involve refacing by purchasing new cabinet doors and drawer fronts, which are available in various sizes, finished or unfinished. Alternatively, repainting an existing vanity with sandpaper, primer, and oil-based paint can offer a fresh look. In some cases, replacing the entire vanity might be a less costly and less stressful option than extensive modifications.
Coordinating the bathroom's soft goods, such as towels, shower curtains, shower mats, and window treatments, creates a cohesive and designer-like appearance. These items can be sourced from local or online discount home stores. If existing items are cherished, new soft goods can be selected to complement them. Finally, painting the walls is an easy and impactful way to change the room's entire ambiance. Bryan advises testing sample paint colors on 24-inch by 24-inch squares and observing them for a day or two before making a final decision. When choosing colors, it is important to consider the room's lighting and the desired mood, avoiding dark colors in small, poorly lit bathrooms.
