A Vintage Pink Tub Became the Showpiece of This Small-Bathroom Renovation
This article details the renovation of a small bathroom in a century-old fixer-upper, spearheaded by stylist Leslie Poyzer. With a background in interior design and a builder father, Poyzer was well-equipped to tackle the project. Upon purchasing the 1890s Des Moines house, the only full bathroom was already gutted, but a vintage pink cast-iron bathtub remained. Poyzer made the decision to keep the tub, recognizing its quality and using its unique color as a central design element for the entire renovation.
The renovation emphasized a blend of style and cost-saving strategies, a core approach shared by Poyzer and her father. They aimed to select budget-friendly options that would complement the historical character of the house and, specifically, the blush-colored tub. A key cost-saving decision was not altering the existing layout of the small bathroom, which significantly reduced both expenses and workload. The design incorporated brushed brass finishes throughout the space, ensuring a cohesive aesthetic. These brass elements were chosen to echo the warmth of the beige grout lines and to introduce a vintage sensibility, even when paired with more contemporary fixtures like the Aureole Colour Series Wall Sconces from SparkandBell.
To further enhance the soft pink hue of the tub without overtly replicating it, Poyzer incorporated a palette of creamy whites, additional brushed brass accents, and rosy woods. The choice of beige grout for both the wall and floor tiles served a dual purpose: it visually unified the different tile patterns and, when placed alongside the pink tub, took on a subtle pinkish tone itself. The renovation also included practical and stylish features such as an arched inset in the shower, created using prefabricated EZ-Niches installed between the studs.
The vanity cabinet was customized with Hedvig arched metal legs from Pretty Pegs and Billsbro pulls from IKEA, demonstrating creative ways to achieve a high-end look on a budget. Maximizing storage in the compact space was another priority. Poyzer selected a large yet simply shaped cabinet, the Jax in Alder from Omega Cabinetry, and maintained organization within its generously deep drawers using movable, stackable clear baskets from The Container Store. The overall renovation successfully transformed a half-demolished space into a stylish and functional bathroom, with the vintage pink tub serving as an inspiring focal point.
