This Cheeky Pink Bathroom Used to Have Wall-to-Wall Carpeting
The article details the renovation of a master bathroom by designer Whinnie Williams, cofounder of the London-based interiors company Poodle and Blonde. Williams purchased pink marble tiles two years prior to finding her dream home in Margate, Kent, which she shares with music video director Tom Dream. The bathroom, when acquired in 2016, presented significant challenges, including wall-to-wall carpeting, plastic windows, and a space-consuming fireplace. Williams aimed to transform these dated features into a vintage-inspired, '70s disco aesthetic, aligning with her company's signature style.
A central aspect of the renovation was the adoption of a strong motif. Inspired by gold swan faucets discovered on eBay for approximately $50 each, Williams decided to base the bathroom's design around birds. She sourced matching swan wall sconces and added fringe to their shades. This predated the popularization of similar swan hardware seen at London's Annabel’s Mayfair Club. Further developing the bird theme, Williams incorporated unique wallpaper featuring Japanese storks carrying takeout boxes, a pattern from Poodle and Blonde's Pavillion collection called "Food Babies." This intricate pattern was hand-stitched onto fabric over three weeks before being transferred to silk wall panels, complemented by identical curtains that introduce softness to the otherwise sleek surfaces.
Overcoming the bathroom's original layout was another critical step. The initial configuration included a fireplace and boiler that severely limited the space available for a shower. To address this, Williams relocated the boiler to an adjacent cupboard and entirely removed the fireplace hearth. The old plastic window was replaced with wood doors, and the frame was extended to open directly onto the roof. With the structural changes complete, the pink marble tiles were installed. Williams opted for smaller, more cost-effective cuts of marble but deliberately designed a pyramid shape above the sink using thin black tiles to create a symmetrical focal point. This installation proved challenging due to the marble's unusual width, requiring precise fabrication of matching strips.
Williams consciously moved away from a modern, state-of-the-art aesthetic, instead embracing a vintage charm. Rather than installing a new, sparkling white claw-foot tub, she found an '80s-era blush tub that perfectly suited the space. Her search on eBay also yielded an aged brass shower fitting set for $330. The bathroom features a sculptural sink paired with an antique chest for storage, deviating from a traditional his-and-hers vanity. A vintage Murano glass chandelier, gifted by Tom Dream, further enhances the retro and whimsical ambiance of the redesigned bathroom, creating a space reminiscent of what Barbie might choose if she had a penchant for avant-garde wallpaper and vintage lighting.
