This Blush Pink Bathroom Belongs to None Other Than Barbie’s Head of Design
The article details the renovation of Kim Culmone's master bathroom, a project led by interior designer Barbie Palomino. Culmone, who serves as Mattel's senior vice president and global head of design for Barbie, desired a luxurious, monochromatic, and elegant bathroom that, surprisingly, was not directly inspired by her work with the iconic doll. The renovation transformed the en suite from 45 to 85 square feet by merging part of an old guest bathroom with the main bathroom.
The project faced significant challenges due to the condo building's strict HOA policies and the presence of immovable steel-framed walls. Detailed planning, including X-raying the floor to precisely locate plumbing for a new tub, was necessary. The shower area, while maintaining its original width and depth, was converted into a stand-alone shower, replacing the old tub combo. Palomino introduced drama by cladding the side walls with zellige tile, complementing the Farrow & Ball Setting Plaster paint on the main walls. The back wall and partition of the shower were adorned with Alpine quartzite from Arizona Tile, chosen for its rich splotches and subtle sparkle that resembles crystals. To ground the space and prevent it from appearing excessively glamorous, weathered concrete floors were installed.
Addressing the lack of natural light, the designer incorporated Visual Comfort wall sconces on either side of the vanity and selected polished nickel finishes for all Phylrich plumbing fixtures. This choice of polished nickel over the more common brass was strategic, as its reflective qualities help to bounce light around the windowless space, enhancing its brightness. The vanity area features an extra-long trough sink that blends seamlessly with a white quartz countertop, providing ample washing space despite the room's size constraints. Custom walnut cabinets with elongated Nest Hardware handles infuse a mid-century-inspired aesthetic into the design.
A newly gained corner in the rearranged floor plan allowed for the inclusion of a freestanding tub. Continuing the polished nickel theme, an ultra-reflective Mirror Ball pendant lamp from DWR was suspended above the soaking tub. A nod to Culmone’s grandmother’s New Orleans home was incorporated through molding details added to a niche, which Palomino describes as adding a touch of elegance, akin to "a little bit of lipstick." The overall renovation successfully created a sophisticated and personalized blush pink bathroom, demonstrating that a space can be luxurious and elegant without direct inspiration from a famous doll.
