Sad beige nurseries are out – here's how to introduce color to your once-neutral space

The trend of all-neutral nurseries, once highly popular, is now considered dated by many. The concept of the 'sad beige baby,' a term coined on social media, describes the prevalence of beige, gray, and muted tones in baby clothing, toys, and nursery designs. While these neutral schemes have been appreciated for their timeless and gender-neutral qualities, both design experts and parents are increasingly looking to infuse color into these spaces without undergoing a complete redecoration. Interior designer Kathy Kuo emphasizes that a nursery should not be an all-beige space. She believes that a joyful and lively color palette is crucial for a nursery to evolve with a child into a kid's bedroom or playroom. Kuo clarifies that this doesn't necessitate overly childish or wacky colors, as parents also spend considerable time in the nursery. Instead, she advocates for viewing color as an ally in designing children's spaces. Several low-effort strategies can be employed to introduce color and personality into a neutral nursery. One effective method is to add wallpaper or a mural. Simply applying wallpaper to an entire wall or creating an accent wall can instantly uplift the decor. Shannon Eddings, for instance, used a stenciled floral design and painted the ceiling and woodwork in a soft green to enhance a neutral nursery. Kristina Khersonsky of STUDIO KEETA suggests using vintage jungle-themed mural wallpaper with limited colors, such as off-white and pistachio, to add interest and depth without overwhelming the space. Notable wallpaper options include the Disney Home x Sanderson Hundred Acre Wood Wallpaper, a jungle wallpaper mural from Lulu & Georgia, and Cupid's Beau Wallpaper from Anthropologie, all of which offer unique patterns and subtle color palettes. Another approach is color blocking. Interior designer Bethany Adams recommends using solid blocks of complementary colors rather than prints to revitalize a bland nursery. She advises combining similarly saturated hues in unexpected ways, such as peach and mustard, to create a sweet yet sophisticated look. These well-placed blocks of color can significantly enhance a beige environment. Painting the ceiling is a bolder option that can create a captivating canopy of color, minimizing the need for extensive accessorizing. For example, a playroom featured an Farrow & Ball painted ceiling designed to resemble a circus tent. Painted ceilings provide a DIY-friendly and customizable solution, allowing for various patterns and colors. An accent ceiling, which covers the entire room, is considered more on-trend than a feature wall and provides a greater impact by evenly dispersing color throughout the space. Introducing colorful furniture is another straightforward way to add vibrancy. Joanna Landais, founder of Eklektik Studio, suggests incorporating bold pieces like a bright teal or sunny yellow nursing chair to serve as a focal point. Complementing this with a patterned rug featuring playful hues can further ground the room, adding texture and visual interest. Finally, layering vibrant accessories can dramatically elevate a bland nursery. Items like rugs, curtains, lighting, wall art, and whimsical decor can tie the entire space together. Joanna Landais suggests a whimsical lampshade with an interesting print to add a unique color element. By strategically layering these colorful pieces against a neutral backdrop, a neutral nursery can be transformed into a vibrant and joyful sanctuary. Examples of such accessories include the Roller Rabbit Rosebud Baby Quilt, the Iris Apfel Jingle Jungle Rug, and a Red Retro Pedal Car Ride-On toy, each adding a distinct splash of color and personality. #NurseryDesign #ColorTrends #InteriorDesign #HomeDecor #ChildsRoom #WallpaperIdeas #Furniture #AccentColors #NurseryDesign #ColorTrends #InteriorDesign #HomeDecor #ChildsRoom #WallpaperIdeas #Furniture #AccentColors
