3 'small but impactful' paint updates to try in 2024, according to a color expert
Decorating with color can significantly transform a home's mood, especially when looking to uplift spirits during winter months. For individuals accustomed to neutral decor, introducing color can seem daunting. Tash Bradley, a color psychologist and Director of Interior Design at Lick Home, offers three 'small but impactful' paint updates to integrate bold colors into living spaces.
One suggestion is to add an accent wall, although Bradley advises a contemporary approach to this often-debated design element. Instead of merely painting one wall, the recommendation is to extend the chosen color down to the skirting and then paint all skirting boards in the room with the same color. This method creates a more cohesive and considered look, making the feature wall feel intentionally integrated rather than merely an isolated splash of color. For an uplifting effect, warm-toned yellows like Lick's Yellow 02 or brownish oranges such as Orange 02 are suggested.
Another strategy involves color drenching small rooms. These spaces, such as powder rooms, laundry rooms, or guest bedrooms, are ideal for experimenting with bolder hues due to their less prominent role in the home. Color drenching involves painting walls, trim, and sometimes even ceilings in a single color, creating an immersive and playful atmosphere. Deep, inky blues like Lick's Blue 07 or dark, warm-toned greens like Green 06 are proposed for creating effective color-drenched looks in these smaller areas. The rationale is that these rooms, not being central living spaces, allow for more adventurous color choices and can infuse personality without overwhelming the entire home.
Finally, upcycling furniture with a bold color provides an effective way to introduce pops of color without committing to painting walls, making it a suitable option for renters or those hesitant about larger paint projects. Painting a piece of furniture, such as a chest of drawers, in a vibrant, high-gloss color can act as a striking focal point in an otherwise neutral room. Bradley specifically recommends using a daring shade like Lick's Red 02 to make a strong statement through furniture. This approach allows for creative expression and breathes new life into existing pieces, adding visual interest and character to a space. These three methods offer versatile options for homeowners to incorporate color, ranging from subtle integration to bold statements, thereby enhancing their home's aesthetic and emotional atmosphere.
