Open Homes Australia Episode 7: French-inspired Home with Solar Technology Installed by SunEnergy
Episode 7 of Open Homes Australia highlights an extraordinary French-inspired residence in Tusmore, Adelaide, featuring a blend of classical aesthetics and modern sustainable technology. The home, a knock-down rebuild, was showcased by James Treble, who conversed with the homeowner, Delilah. Its design incorporates traditional French architectural elements such as arched windows and doorways, a steeply pitched roof, and a welcoming front courtyard. The interior continues this theme with grand chandeliers, parquetry flooring, and intricately molded, coffered ceilings, complemented by classical furniture and a palette of white, grey, and slate tones. Built-in cabinetry further enhances the classical ambience.
A focal point of the interior design is the powder room, which breaks from the muted palette with a vibrant floral wallpaper carefully selected by Delilah, adding a unique splash of color while maintaining the overall elegant French theme. The kitchen, integrated into a spacious open-plan living area that includes the dining and living rooms, is another testament to French inspiration. It features an oven and stovetop combination, tapware, cabinetry, and benchtops that harmonize with the classical design. The expansive living space is illuminated by numerous large windows, which not only enhance the aesthetic but also maximize natural light, reducing the need for artificial lighting during daylight hours.
Despite the aesthetic appeal and large open spaces, the home faced challenges with heating and cooling, leading to quarterly electricity bills of approximately $1,200. This issue was resolved through the installation of a substantial solar energy system by SunEnergy, a prominent solar retailer operating across South Australia, Western Australia, Victoria, and Queensland. SunEnergy specializes in providing and installing solar panels, inverters, battery storage, EV chargers, and hot water systems.
Roshan from SunEnergy detailed the solar solution implemented for the home: a 20kW solar system paired with 27kW of Tesla Powerwall battery storage. A key requirement from the homeowners was that the solar panels be discreetly installed, invisible from street level, a condition successfully met by SunEnergy. This system is designed to generate an average of 80kW of electricity daily. Any surplus power produced is stored in the Tesla Powerwall batteries, ensuring a reliable energy supply for nighttime use and periods of low solar generation, such as cloudy days. This comprehensive solar and battery storage solution has effectively reduced the home's quarterly electricity bills to zero, allowing the homeowners to comfortably operate their four air conditioning units year-round. This demonstrates how advanced solar technology can seamlessly integrate with classical home design to achieve significant energy independence and cost savings.
