Case study: Ege Carpets at The Elvetham – a harmony of heritage and design

The Elvetham, a luxury hotel situated in Hampshire, UK, boasts a rich history spanning centuries, with its origins tracing back to the 11th century. The estate has been a silent witness to significant historical events, including Eadric the Wild’s defiance against William the Conqueror and King Henry VIII’s romantic involvement with Jane Seymour. The hotel’s extensive grounds, ancient oak trees, and parklands collectively narrate the historical tapestry of England. While the medieval structure has undergone transformations over time, its inherent heritage is meticulously preserved within the hotel's stunning interiors, which harmoniously blend modern luxury with a profound respect for its past. Comprising 43 guestrooms in the main house and an additional 48 rooms in the adjacent court building, totaling 91 rooms, The Elvetham successfully integrates the allure of its historic setting with contemporary design elements and hospitality standards. The recent renovation of The Elvetham was spearheaded by Sindri Matharu, Design Director at Jastar Capital, following the acquisition of the property by her family. Recognizing the need to align the interior aesthetics with the grandeur of the exterior, Matharu initiated a comprehensive update. She noted the inherent challenges in balancing historical elements with modern requirements in such properties, observing that the existing rooms, characterized by high ceilings and wood details, lacked warmth. The integration of carpets was deemed essential to introduce this warmth, though the discovery of original tiling beneath old carpets in public areas led to a strategic shift towards utilizing runners and rugs to accentuate these rediscovered features. For the 2,000 square meters of carpet commissioned from Ege Carpets, Matharu drew inspiration directly from The Elvetham's historical architecture. She specifically used the octagonal ceilings as a foundational motif for the custom Colortec carpet designs. The color palette for these carpets was carefully matched to the original tiling unearthed during the renovation, ensuring a cohesive and historically sensitive integration. In prominent areas such as the Top Hall and Bar, Matharu referenced the textile designs of William Morris, whose artistic contributions are considered fundamental to early British design. In the guest bedrooms, a subtle herringbone pattern from Ege Carpets’ Graphic collection was selected. This choice was intended to evoke the classic aesthetic of an English gentleman’s residence, while simultaneously complementing the intricate designs of the headboards. Matharu commended the collaborative process with Ege Carpets, highlighting their understanding, patience, and flexibility in accommodating changes to the initial specifications. Guests have expressed particular appreciation for the ground floor runners and rugs, which effectively showcase the original tiles that were uncovered. Matharu herself considers the rug in the Top Hall to be her favorite design element, as it imparts a sense of opulence and enhances the ceiling details and surrounding tiling. Reflecting on the design philosophy, Matharu underscored the importance of respecting the building’s historical context. She emphasized that while design is inherently subjective, the primary objective should be to complement the past rather than detract from it. Ege Carpets, a specialist in high-quality textile flooring for luxury hotels globally, offers Graphic and Colortec collections that merge sophisticated aesthetics with comfort, creating spaces of timeless elegance. The Colortec collection provides extensive design flexibility, allowing hotels to embed their brand identity and unique elements into custom carpet designs. The use of pre-dyed yarn in their products ensures precise color matching and seamless integration of multiple shades, offering creative freedom without compromise. Ege Carpets also prioritizes sustainability, with both Graphic and Colortec carpets holding Cradle to Cradle and Indoor Air Comfort Gold certifications. Their commitment to waste reduction and cost efficiency is evident in their ability to tailor carpets to specific room sizes, thereby minimizing waste, reducing installation time, and lowering overall costs. The company's pre-cut service further simplifies installation and site handling. With options for textile or felt backings, Ege Carpets provides comfort, superior acoustics, and optimal support for luxury hotel interiors. The availability of realistic carpet samples and large-scale paper prints assists hoteliers in visualizing the final outcome and assessing material quality prior to installation. #HotelDesign #EgeCarpets #TheElvetham #HeritageDesign #InteriorRenovation #CustomCarpets #LuxuryHospitality #SindriMatharu #HistoricProperties #HotelDesign #EgeCarpets #TheElvetham #HeritageDesign #InteriorRenovation #CustomCarpets #LuxuryHospitality #SindriMatharu #HistoricProperties
