Matter flatwoven carpets weave digital randomness and Scandinavian craft together

The MATTER collection, a collaboration between Snøhetta and Ege Carpets, introduces a novel approach to carpet design by integrating digital randomness and advanced technology with traditional Scandinavian craft and sustainable principles. This collection redefines conventional carpet patterns through a generative design process. Snøhetta developed an algorithmic method where patterns are continuously generated with a degree of randomness, preventing exact repetition. This approach aims to mimic the inherent unpredictability and organic nature of natural landscapes, resulting in carpets that appear both structured and dynamic. Francesca Giulia Poli, Snøhetta’s Product Designer and project lead, highlights the exploration of scale, craftsmanship, and technology inherent in the MATTER collection. Each carpet is conceived as a woven landscape, where individual threads contribute to the overall aesthetic. The design process meticulously translates digital code into pixels, and then into threads, demonstrating how micro-scale decisions collectively influence the spatial experience. When viewed from a distance, the carpets present a uniform appearance; however, closer inspection reveals subtle, continuous variations that create a living and evolving surface within a room. Manufactured using Ege Carpets' advanced flatweave loom, MATTER carpets are digitally generated and constructed for longevity. The commitment to sustainability is evident through the exclusive use of carefully selected recycled yarns, which are chosen for both their environmental benefits and their aesthetic properties. This focus on sustainable materials and production minimizes waste and ensures the durability and beauty of the carpets, particularly in areas with high foot traffic. The collection aims for circularity, incorporating post-consumer and industrial recycled content from its inception. The MATTER collection is available in two distinct color palettes, each comprising 18 base colors. One palette features subdued beige and grey tones, offering a neutral and calming presence. The other palette utilizes vibrant blues and greens, providing a more saturated and impactful option. This dual-palette strategy allows for significant design flexibility, enabling the carpets to adapt their character to diverse interior contexts while maintaining a consistent visual language. This versatility ensures that the carpets can harmonize with various design schemes while still making a distinct statement. Challenging the conventional uniformity often found in mass-produced items, MATTER draws inspiration from the non-repetitive characteristics of nature. Marius Myking, Director of Snøhetta Product Design, explains that the objective was to replicate natural randomness through a semi-controllable digital process. This methodology results in carpets that actively resist repetition, celebrating variation at a microscopic level. Consequently, no two moments or sections of the carpet are ever precisely identical, fostering a sense of uniqueness and organic evolution within the environment. The unpredictable patterns contribute to preventing visual fatigue and ensure that spaces feel fresh and engaging over time. Beyond being a mere product, MATTER embodies a comprehensive process and a design philosophy. It represents a digital landscape woven with intent, embracing imperfection and logical design principles, while prioritizing material honesty and the intrinsic beauty of complexity. The collaboration between Snøhetta and Ege Carpets integrates architectural vision, technological innovation, and textile expertise. This collection encourages a new perspective on design, one that values both the precision of digital fabrication and the rich, unpredictable qualities of the natural world. #CarpetDesign #DigitalRandomness #ScandinavianCraft #SustainableMaterials #GenerativeDesign #InteriorDesign #TextileInnovation #Snøhetta #EgeCarpets #CarpetDesign #DigitalRandomness #ScandinavianCraft #SustainableMaterials #GenerativeDesign #InteriorDesign #TextileInnovation #Snøhetta #EgeCarpets
