The Newstalgia Rug Collection Brings Us Back to the Future
The Newstalgia rug collection, a collaboration between Radici and designer Tekla Evelina Severin (Teklan), was unveiled at EquipHotel. This collection introduces significant innovations in carpet manufacturing, notably the Bloom Back surface and AlleRAD technology, which enable the carpets to be fully commercially recyclable at the end of their lifespan. This commitment to sustainability is central to the collection's philosophy, achieved through advanced yarn technology and backing materials.
The Newstalgia collection draws inspiration from design aesthetics of the 1970s and 1980s, reinterpreting familiar shapes and offering a diverse range of colors for extensive customization. The collection features eight distinct prints: Monogram, Elliptic, Weave, Brick, Net, Snake, Folding, and Backgammon. Custom design options are also available, allowing for tailored interior schemes.
The Monogram pattern incorporates a repeated block of twin graphic L’s, creating a linear element reminiscent of classic fashion house logos. Elliptic pays homage to the 1960s Op Art movement, utilizing bold shapes and tonal pairings to create visual illusions of depth and movement. Weave draws on traditional hand-weaving techniques, featuring intersecting color blocks that merge heritage with a modern, whimsical sensibility, often within a restrained color palette.
Brick patterns are characterized by strong color contrasts, such as turquoise and burgundy or orange and midnight blue, forming interlocking motifs that suggest solidity and strength. Net employs optical effects to create a sense of depth through regular horizontal and vertical forms, promoting a feeling of calm. This pattern is offered in two color variants, blending peach, beige, green, and burgundy, or brown, light blue, beige, and black.
Snake features bold, stylized bands of color that evoke the natural world, bringing vibrant hues into interior spaces. Folding, inspired by Escher's work, explores impossible shapes, providing a structured yet chaotic element. The final pattern, Backgammon, references the ancient game, combining rich mustard yellow and deep brown to blend a nostalgic 1970s feel with contemporary interpretations.
Tekla Evelina Severin's design philosophy emphasizes the transformative power of color, stating that its perception is relative to its surroundings. Her diverse portfolio includes interior design, furniture, clothing, and set design, all unified by her expansive use of color. Radici, known for its sustainable rug manufacturing, further enhances the collection with AlleRAD technology, which reduces dust and allergens, setting a new standard for eco-friendly and health-conscious carpet products within the industry.
