Thoughtful Design Yields an AMAZING Southern Kitchen!

Atlanta architect Frank Neely, in collaboration with interior designer Wendy Meredith, created a kitchen in Buckhead, Atlanta, that seamlessly blends modern functionality with a historic aesthetic. Neely's design philosophy centers on crafting new houses that evoke a sense of history, appearing as if they were built in 1910 with stories ingrained in their structure. This approach extends to the kitchen, a space often challenging to reconcile with a desire for both contemporary utility and vintage charm. The design choices for this kitchen prioritize a timeless quality. The cabinetry, for instance, was selected for its furniture-like appearance and features a creamy white, hand-painted finish. This color choice deviates from the trend of stark white cabinets, offering a warmer and more inviting ambiance that complements the historic feel. The hand-painted aspect further enhances the bespoke and aged character of the space. Several charming and unique elements contribute to the kitchen's aged aesthetic. A walnut countertop with a distinctive herringbone pattern is featured on the island, contributing to an aged patina. Perimeter counters are made of classic Carrera marble, maintaining a sense of traditional elegance. Rather than typical stone or tile, painted wood lines the walls as a backsplash, further emphasizing the home's character. Overhead, ceiling beams crafted from wormy chestnut add to the aged-wood goodness and architectural interest. The kitchen's focal point is a CornuFe range from La Cornue, chosen in black to resemble an iron stove, which Neely believes makes it more special than a stainless-steel alternative and reinforces the historical appearance. A raised fireplace, artfully integrated into an arched design with a tile surround and honed black granite countertop, serves as another significant feature. This fireplace, initially designed for wood-burning but later converted to gas logs for convenience, visually and literally warms the room, enhancing its turn-of-the-century appeal. Functionality is also subtly integrated within the design. Appliances like the dishwasher and refrigerator/freezer are concealed behind cabinetry panels, preventing a modern, metallic look from disrupting the vintage aesthetic. A built-in desk area provides a space for homework or computer use, designed to remain tidy due to the homeowner's separate office elsewhere. Windows framed in mahogany, stained an espresso color, are another intentional design choice. These dark-stained windows are a favorite of Neely's, as they draw attention to the outdoors and enhance the old-house feeling through contrast. Lighting fixtures, such as lantern-style sconces by the windows, introduce a New England flair, adding another layer of traditional charm. The breakfast room maintains a casual atmosphere with lightweight wicker chairs. Overall, the kitchen exemplifies a thoughtful design approach that prioritizes a harmonious blend of historical character and modern liveability, creating a space that feels both established and incredibly functional. #SouthernKitchen #KitchenDesign #TraditionalHome #HistoricCharm #InteriorDesign #FrankNeely #WendyMeredith #BuckheadAtlanta #HomeRenovation #SouthernKitchen #KitchenDesign #TraditionalHome #HistoricCharm #InteriorDesign #FrankNeely #WendyMeredith #BuckheadAtlanta #HomeRenovation
