This article details the transformation of a coastal new-build home's kitchen and breakfast nook in Nags Head, North Carolina, by designers Arianna Pannoni and Kasey Bedford of Winsome Interior Design. The primary objective was to instill a sense of timelessness and a lived-in feel, mirroring a home the family had occupied for two decades. The design incorporates a blend of cottagecore charm and sun-washed coastal aesthetics, along with subtle English-inspired elements. The design process began with establishing a coastal color palette. The floors were painted ocean blue and pre-aged to create a desirable patina, while the walls were kept white to provide an airy backdrop for the antique-filled open-concept space. Green and blue textiles were strategically used to reinforce the coastal theme. Key paint colors specified include Blue Nose by Benjamin Moore for the floors and All White by Farrow & Ball for the walls. For cabinetry, a two-tone Shaker-style layout was chosen, developed in collaboration with Tanya Smith-Shiflett of Unique Kitchens & Baths. This selection aimed to create a timeless foundation for the kitchen's aesthetic. The countertops and extended backsplashes feature ogee-edged Calacatta Oro marble, adding a touch of elegance to the design. A prominent feature is an eight-foot-long center island topped with a warm white oak slab, designed to evoke the appearance of driftwood. This island serves as a central gathering point for family activities, accommodating snacks, casual meals, and fostering a relaxed atmosphere during social hours. Above the island, a rise-and-fall pendant with ruffled ceramic shades introduces a subtle British accent. The kitchen's layout prioritizes functionality and views, with a fireclay apron-front sink and an unlacquered brass bridge faucet positioned under ceiling-height windows to offer an expansive, scenic outlook. Woven window shades enhance texture and provide privacy. Historical charm is incorporated through custom creamy taupe plate racks flanking the windows, encouraging a self-serve, relaxed vacation home ambiance. Shelving above these racks provides additional space for decorative and entertaining items. Mixed metals contribute to the kitchen's aged aesthetic, with unlacquered brass used for faucets, a pot filler, and cabinetry hardware. The stainless steel range features copper knobs and handles, adding to the built-over-time impression. An inset pantry, designed as an appliance garage opposite the sink, helps maintain a clutter-free environment. Its custom crosshatched wire door inserts further enhance the British-coastal feel. Adjacent to the kitchen, an oak coffee-bar-meets-cocktail bar is integrated, featuring hot and cold taps and an inset sink. This bar area includes deep drawer-style mini-fridge and freezer for seamless integration and open shelving for display. Green lighting and a scalloped tray introduce pops of color. Finally, the dining nook features a wraparound shelf adorned with sea-salted antiques and two captain’s chairs, providing nautical touches. Patterned pillows in blues and yellows contribute to a welcoming and comfortable atmosphere, making it an inviting space for family gatherings.
