This Columbus Home Seamlessly Marries Old & New
In Columbus, GA, a young family's home showcases a successful integration of antique decor with a fresh, contemporary aesthetic, a design challenge expertly navigated by interior designer Chenault James. The core philosophy of this project revolves around blending old and new elements, and embracing unique, unconventional pieces.
The foyer establishes a vibrant first impression with cheerful colors. Custom turquoise light fixtures, crafted by lighting artisan Elizabeth Martin, complement an aqua grass cloth wallpaper and framed bird prints, creating a traditional yet lively entrance. A wooden bench adds a pop of yellow, deviating from typical foyer arrangements. The dining room features a mahogany table, a traditional Southern centerpiece. To modernize this, James incorporated Quadrille's lively taupe print wallpaper, lush coral velvet draperies with Lucite hardware, and soft blue chair fabric. A Swedish demilune from A. Tyner in Atlanta further enhances the room's unique blend of styles. The breakfast room, designed for casual family meals, is anchored by an antique trestle table. This space is refreshed with navy and yellow pillows, made from durable outdoor fabric, and abstract art. A floral painting by local artist Erin Gregory harmonizes the room's colors, while scalloped yellow plates on brackets add a kid-friendly touch.
In contrast to the vibrant communal spaces, the master bedroom maintains a soft and serene palette of grays and whites. This tranquility is punctuated by a painting from Erin Gregory, providing a subtle burst of color. Furnishings in Swedish grays and blues contribute to a soothing and relaxed atmosphere. Unique elements include light blue antique shutters from Europe, which add historical character, and a pink love seat that serves as an unexpected focal point and a comfortable seating area. Bedside chests from Chelsea Editions offer both aesthetic appeal and practical storage.
The master bathroom, a result of a recent remodel, continues the sophisticated gray and white theme, incorporating a silver patterned wallpaper, gray cabinets, and arabesque-shaped floor tiles. This classic yet modern design was enhanced by custom cabinetry from Hammerhead Carpentry, owned by the designer’s husband, Ed James, featuring distinctive metal grilles in a nickel finish. A custom makeup table with an "X" motif and a soft turquoise light fixture extends the Scandinavian-inspired color palette found in the master suite. Chenault James emphasizes the importance of clients embracing individuality and the effort required to curate unique finds, believing this approach ultimately leads to a more successful and personalized home design.
