Netflix Deep Dive | The Cottonwood Kitchen Remodel
This article provides an in-depth look into the kitchen and pantry renovation featured in the first episode of Season Four of Studio McGee's Netflix show, 'Dream Home Makeover.' The renovation encompasses the kitchen, dining room, and a previously underutilized dining area transformed into a multi-use pantry within a Studio McGee member’s home.
The kitchen's design prominently features two-tone cabinetry. The lower cabinets and the island are finished in a dark charcoal shade, specifically Peppercorn by Sherwin-Williams, creating a moody contrast. The upper cabinets and adjacent built-in wall cabinetry are painted in Natural Tan by Sherwin-Williams, a light cream color. The island's countertop utilizes dark-hued quartz from Caesarstone (5810 Black Tempal), while the remaining kitchen countertops feature a lighter grey-veined quartz, also from Caesarstone (5031 Statuario Maximus). Aged brass hardware is consistently applied throughout the cabinetry. A notable design element is the quartz countertop extending up the back wall, incorporating a six-inch ledge referred to as a "salt and pepper and spice station" by Shea McGee. A custom-made plaster hood by Killowen Construction serves as a central statement piece, designed with distinctive curves.
The walls and ceiling of the kitchen are painted in Timeless by Clare, and white oak hardwood flooring extends throughout the entire space, ensuring continuity. A coffee nook features a shiplap back, adorned with a brass gallery railing and closed storage extending to the ceiling, adding an organic touch. The dining room, open to the kitchen, maintains the same oak hardwood flooring. It features a six-person oak wood table illuminated by a linear aged iron chandelier. The renovation included replacing the original, inefficient doors with French doors, providing a seamless connection to the backyard.
The pantry is highlighted as a particularly successful design element, functioning beyond basic food storage due to its substantial size, which accommodates an island. The walls, ceiling, and trim of the pantry are painted in Timeless by Clare, mirroring the kitchen's palette, while the built-in shelving and shiplap backing are finished in Natural Tan by Sherwin-Williams. The extensive shelving is visually varied by the use of seagrass baskets on the lower shelves, allowing for decorative displays on the upper sections. A marble-top island within the pantry offers a versatile surface for food preparation and can be moved as needed, facilitating efficient entertaining by providing a space to stage items and conceal messes. The article concludes by acknowledging the various sponsors who contributed to the project, including Davis Mill and Cabinet, Hallmark Floors, Kohler Co., Metrie, Monogram Appliances, Mountain West Interiors, Pella, Rejuvenation, The Shade Store, Visual Comfort & Co., Caesarstone, Clare, and Killowen Construction.
