Netflix Deep Dive | The Millcreek Cottage Remodel
This article provides an in-depth look into Episode Two of Netflix's "Dream Home Makeover," focusing on the Millcreek Cottage Remodel project. The design challenge involved transforming an open-concept living room, dining room, and kitchen for a mother-son duo, aiming to blend their distinct styles cohesively. The central strategy for achieving this cohesion involved the consistent use of certain materials and color palettes across the interconnected spaces.
The chosen wall paint for the majority of the space was "Timeless by Clare," a neutral shade that provides a unified backdrop. The kitchen cabinets, however, were painted in "Agreeable Gray by Sherwin-Williams," introducing a subtle variation. A key design element in the kitchen is a beautiful stone stove backsplash, which directly ties into the aesthetic of the living room, ensuring a visual connection between the areas. A custom-stained wood beam above the stove, matching the kitchen island's finish, further reinforces this unity across the four distinct living zones. The kitchen features oil-rubbed bronze hardware on the cabinets and a custom dark-stained island by Davis Custom Millwork. The island was a strategic addition, designed to enhance social interaction, provide additional storage, improve traffic flow, and elevate the overall luxurious feel of the space. Overhead, a black iron and gold leaf pendant light illuminates the area, complemented by a trio of McGee & Co.'s Fielder Counter Stools, offering seating options.
The L-shaped kitchen layout includes a refrigerator and sink positioned under a window that overlooks the backyard. The backsplash in this area is a handmade ceramic tile from Ann Sacks in a Blanco Gloss finish, while the countertops throughout the kitchen are a grey and white quartz from Caesarstone, specifically the 5171 Arabetto.
Moving into the dining room, the furniture selections are all from McGee & Co., including the Eldridge Dining Table paired with six Hadden Chairs, featuring light oak frames and woven cane seats. The room's heritage-inspired aesthetic is enhanced by a collection of vintage plates displayed on one wall. A unique lighting choice was made, with a pendant light placed directly over the dining table, and a chandelier positioned over the kitchen island, diverging from a more conventional layout.
In the living room, an L-shaped arrangement is designed to facilitate easy movement into the dining areas. The fireplace serves as the central focal point, and its stone surround matches the material used for the kitchen's stovetop nook, maintaining visual consistency. Flush-mount lights arranged in a grid pattern provide ambient lighting without obstructing views of the TV or fireplace. The furniture in the living room predominantly features pieces from McGee & Co., such as the Macy Slipcover Sofa, the Alford Glider Chair in cream boucle, the Cybil Dresser placed opposite the fireplace, and a pair of Channel Ottomans positioned in front of the fireplace. An entryway is defined by a vintage table sourced from Roundtop, Texas, and the client's personal eagle convex mirror, adding character and a sense of history to the home's entrance. The article concludes by acknowledging the various sponsors who contributed to the project.
