This Food Stylist Consulted a Color Expert for Her Galley Kitchen Reno
Diana Yen, a professional recipe developer and food stylist and founder of creative studio A La Carte, embarked on a renovation of her galley kitchen in Ojai, California. Her approach began with decluttering, removing upper cabinets surrounding the cooktop and refrigerator to make the small space feel larger and more open. She also replaced the microwave-fan combo with a proper vent hood, contributing to a less heavy aesthetic.
Yen, known for her resourcefulness, particularly in developing firepit-cooked dishes for her upcoming cookbook, strategically managed her renovation budget by deciding where to save and where to splurge. A significant saving came from retaining her existing Shaker-style cabinets and simply repainting them. To select the perfect colors for her narrow and dark kitchen, she sought the advice of Paddy O’Donnell, international brand ambassador at Farrow & Ball. O’Donnell steered her away from trendy purple hues, recommending sophisticated neutrals instead. He suggested London Clay, a warm brown, for the lower cabinets and Jitney, a sandy gray, for the upper cabinets and walls. Yen initially thought these colors might be too dark but embraced O'Donnell's philosophy that small, naturally dark spaces can be made moody and cozy.
Given the kitchen's compact size, Yen understood that appliances would naturally draw attention. She partnered with Big Chill to acquire an induction stove and refrigerator in matte black with brushed brass trim. These appliances not only enhanced functionality for her work but also contributed to the desired aesthetic, evoking a luxe, traditional country kitchen feel, particularly in the style of French and British kitchens, while still being electric—a key consideration for her neighborhood.
Addressing the limited natural light, Yen prioritized upgrading the artificial lighting. She replaced recessed cans with brushed brass spotlights, purchased from Etsy, and installed them on dimmers to create a more theatrical ambiance. She also sourced a brass switch plate and a brass faucet from Etsy, with the faucet coming from a Moroccan vendor. During the electrical rework, Yen consolidated outlets and added USB charging ports, a practical feature for her frequent phone use while cooking.
For countertops, Yen initially desired marble but opted for quartz after learning that marble’s maintenance issues could affect resale value in her area. She found a quartz option that mimicked marble’s appearance without the high maintenance. A new Native Trails farmhouse sink was installed opposite the cooktop, adding to the kitchen’s refreshed look. Finally, Yen incorporated decorative elements, such as a brass rail from DeVol for cooking tools and herbs, and a still life print, showcasing her styling expertise in the kitchen’s finishing touches.
