Inside a textile designer's kitchen renovation – including her Instagram-famous breakfast nook
Swedish textile designer Cathy Nordström embarked on a comprehensive kitchen renovation to transform her cramped, outdated kitchen into a warm, inviting, and timeless space. Living with a family of five and a dog, Cathy required a highly functional layout that would not feel dated in a decade. She deliberately avoided trendy materials and specific styles, aiming for enduring appeal.
Despite her design expertise, Cathy enlisted Rebecca of Inuti Design, an interior designer she discovered on Instagram. Rebecca's previous work on a family friend's childhood home, a place Cathy cherished, added a personal connection to the collaboration. The renovation presented a challenge due to the kitchen's existing layout, featuring two doors and an open archway that limited counter and storage space.
The design process began with the selection of dark wood for the kitchen units. To prevent the space from feeling too dark, Cathy opted for warm off-white upper cabinets and appliance areas, matching the living room walls. These overhead cupboards incorporate fluted glass, revealing the reddish hue of Farrow & Ball's Picture Gallery Red on the interior woodwork, adding a subtle touch of color and depth.
A notable design element is the arched recess in the wall of fitted cabinets, providing open shelving for morning coffee preparations, a detail Cathy particularly enjoys. Rebecca's suggestion for a rounded profile instead of a straight edge contributed to the kitchen's timeless aesthetic. An ingenious and practical feature for pet owners is the built-in recess for dog bowls, carved out from the bottom drawer of a corner unit.
Cathy's textile design background influenced her approach to soft furnishings, which she believes are crucial for creating an inviting atmosphere. The dining nook, a prominent feature, showcases a deep seat upholstered in her own Faye Fabric in Rust & Lilac, complemented by matching scatter cushions with piping and ruffles. Schumacher blinds in a warm chestnut color, featuring the 'Pomegranate' print, were chosen for their aesthetic appeal. A vintage Swedish Rölakan rug further enhances the pattern mixing, which Cathy identifies as a core aspect of her design philosophy.
Sourcing furniture and accessories for the renovated kitchen proved more challenging than selecting textiles. An antique Swedish bockbord table with rounded corners was a rare find, chosen for its ability to fit snugly into the space. The lighting solution involved vintage, wall-mounted lamps from 1st Dibs, as Cathy preferred to avoid overhead pendants. A custom loose linen cover was created for the plain lampshades, providing a simple yet impactful design enhancement.
