This Wall-Decor Hack Is Even Easier Than Peel-and-Stick Wallpaper
The article presents a creative wall-decor hack that uses textiles as an alternative to traditional wallpaper or peel-and-stick options, catering to individuals who desire a less permanent commitment to wall decoration. This method is highlighted as being simpler and more flexible, especially appealing to renters or those who frequently redecorate.
The core of this hack involves pinning a textile, such as a blanket or tapestry, to a wall and then layering other decorative items on top of it. Alex Tieghi-Walker, a writer and creative director based in Berkeley, California, demonstrates this technique in his redwood home. He utilized a Nepalese throw as a base on his wood-paneled wall, over which he layered various objects. Tieghi-Walker's motivation stemmed from his appreciation for how the soft texture of fabric could effectively frame harder items like mirrors and prints, creating a unique aesthetic.
Initially, his arrangement included only a textile and artwork. However, he later enhanced the display by adding Matisse-inspired sconces sourced from Etsy, complete with hot pink candles. He meticulously attached the sconces by nailing them into the wider openings of the tapestry's weave, ensuring the heavy metal would not stretch or damage the fabric. He observed that this addition, especially with tall beeswax tapers, imparted a more sophisticated and grand appearance to the vignette. While he reserves lighting the candles for special occasions due to concerns about wax dripping, he notes that when lit, they cast an almost gothic glow.
The practicality of this wall-decor solution extends to renters, offering a departure from plain white walls or the challenges associated with temporary wallpaper. The article suggests selecting four or five diverse items typically hung separately, such as a mirror, a plug-in light fixture, and an oil painting, and attaching them directly to the chosen textile using a hammer and nails. This approach eliminates the need for measuring, priming, or pasting, common steps in traditional wallpaper application, positioning it as a convenient and straightforward DIY project.
