In This Bedroom Makeover, the DIY Headboard Doubles as an Art Installation
Carmeon Hamilton, founder of Nubi Interiors, undertook a seven-week renovation of her Memphis home's bathroom and bedroom, driven by an expressive dark juniper shade. Initially, her bedroom walls were already this deep green. However, upon discovering a similar-colored subway tile from The Tile Shop, she decided to extend this rich hue throughout the bathroom and other elements of the bedroom. The dark juniper, chosen to complement her love for plants, deviates from the typical black often used for moody interiors. The renovation involved repainting the bedroom walls white while incorporating the green into the ceiling, a DIY slatted headboard, curtains, and a leather reading chair.
Hamilton's experience, despite her 12 years in interior design, proved to be eye-opening, revealing several key lessons. One significant change during the renovation involved altering the original plan for a large bedroom window to French doors, providing direct access to the backyard and allowing more natural light. This decision also set the stage for a future deck building project. The renovation process also highlighted the importance of pre-planning for the demolition phase. Hamilton emphasizes that seemingly minor details, such as faucet valves and electrical outlet placements, must be decided early as they dictate the entire construction timeline. Neglecting these details can lead to delays once demolition commences and structural work begins.
A standout feature of the bedroom makeover is the custom DIY headboard. Due to a lack of space for traditional architectural detailing, Hamilton created a slatted wood art installation behind the bed. This involved painting a green rectangle on the wall and then attaching similarly painted wood slats, spaced one inch apart, using a nail gun. This technique introduced texture and dimension, becoming her favorite element in the room. The renovation also showcased her knack for repurposing, as she transformed a vintage office furniture piece with cane doors and a warm finish into a chic bathroom vanity. She had held onto this piece for six months, anticipating its perfect coordination with the green tile she envisioned.
Another crucial lesson learned was the difficulty of undertaking multiple major renovations simultaneously in one's own home. Hamilton and her husband moved their bed to the living room and lived without a bathroom for weeks, a situation she now advises clients to avoid by staggering kitchen and bathroom renovations. The article concludes by inviting readers to listen to Domino's podcast, "Design Time," which explores how to create meaningful spaces and personal home stories, reinforcing the blog's focus on design inspiration and practical advice.
