Boudoir decor: Kristin Kong’s stylish master bedroom
Kristin Kong, a designer, transformed her master bedroom in a Norcross townhouse complex into a dramatic and luxurious space, diverging significantly from its generic architectural starting point. Her design philosophy for bedrooms emphasizes relaxation, incorporating elements that contribute to an unwinding atmosphere. Key to this transformation were both cost-saving measures and strategic splurges on essential items.
Kong identifies several 'must-haves' for any bedroom to function as a well-appointed retreat: high-quality sheets, ambient lighting, and drapery with blackout lining. These foundational elements ensure comfort and functionality within the private space. Her approach involved a careful selection of materials and design principles to achieve a movie-star boudoir aesthetic.
A central feature of the room is the wallpaper, chosen for its dark and dramatic effect. Kong opted for a vinyl wall covering in a deep gray, almost black hue, primarily for its durability. This selection served as a bold backdrop that established the overall mood of the room.
Symmetry played a crucial role in the room's design, which Kong admits is a natural inclination for her, valuing the balance it brings. This was achieved through the placement of coordinating nightstands and identical lamps on either side of the bed. Small, round mirrors were positioned above the nightstands, which Kong appreciates for their ability to reflect light and enhance the room's dynamism. The mirrors were also strategically placed to accentuate the shape of the headboard, contributing to the room's cohesive visual appeal.
The custom headboard serves as a significant focal point, designed to offer a dramatic presence without overwhelming the dark wallpaper. Kong selected a velvet fabric in the same color palette as the wall covering, ensuring it harmonized with the background while still standing out. This choice also addressed her desire for subtle curves in the design, preventing the space from feeling overly feminine, a consideration given that she shares the room with her husband.
To introduce contrast and visual interest, Kong incorporated different metal finishes throughout the room, creating an eclectic yet coordinated look. Crisp white bed linens were used to offset the dark elements, providing a fresh and clean counterpoint to the deep tones. A final touch of color was added through plum pillows and a throw, introducing a subtle pop that completed the sophisticated and inviting boudoir decor.
