Kasey Cunneen, a mother of five, undertook a bedroom makeover during 2020, transforming a plain room into a cozy, modern farmhouse-style retreat for under $1,000. Despite living in a rural area 45 minutes from the nearest Bunnings, Kasey drew inspiration from Pinterest, Google Images, and Instagram, incorporating elements of green and warm stone colors found during a day trip to the Coorong. All screw holes and joins were filled with putty, and the edges where the moulding met the walls were caulked for a seamless finish. After drying, the surfaces were sanded smooth. Utilizing pre-primed MDF mouldings saved the step of priming. The entire board and batten wall was then painted with Dulux Flinders Green. Another significant addition was a floating timber shelf. Kasey sanded and stained the timber, mixing various stains to achieve her desired color. To support the shelf, small pieces of leftover timber were attached to either end of the wall. The timber shelf was then secured to the wall using screws drilled diagonally into the wall studs and also into the added end supports. Beyond these major structural changes, several smaller DIY projects contributed to the overall transformation. Old bedside tables were spray-painted black and updated with new bronze handles. Vases and plant pots were painted using Bunnings paint sample pots mixed with baking soda to create a textured finish, then rubbed with dirt for a distressed, aged appearance.
