Reader reno: A beautiful bedroom makeover with a board and batten feature wall
Kasey Cunneen, a mother of five, undertook a bedroom makeover during 2020, transforming a plain room into a cozy, modern farmhouse-style retreat for under $1,000. Despite living in a rural area 45 minutes from the nearest Bunnings, Kasey drew inspiration from Pinterest, Google Images, and Instagram, incorporating elements of green and warm stone colors found during a day trip to the Coorong. This small-scale renovation served as a personal project amidst the challenges of the year, allowing her to indulge in her passion for DIY and interior styling.
The renovation process involved several key steps, starting with a board and batten feature wall. Kasey meticulously measured the wall to determine the required moulding lengths and calculate spacing, then traced these locations onto the wall. The vertical lengths of moulding were attached first, followed by the horizontal pieces, using screws to secure them to the gyprock. All screw holes and joins were filled with putty, and the edges where the moulding met the walls were caulked for a seamless finish. After drying, the surfaces were sanded smooth. Utilizing pre-primed MDF mouldings saved the step of priming. The entire board and batten wall was then painted with Dulux Flinders Green.
Another significant addition was a floating timber shelf. Kasey sanded and stained the timber, mixing various stains to achieve her desired color. To support the shelf, small pieces of leftover timber were attached to either end of the wall. The timber shelf was then secured to the wall using screws drilled diagonally into the wall studs and also into the added end supports.
Beyond these major structural changes, several smaller DIY projects contributed to the overall transformation. Old bedside tables were spray-painted black and updated with new bronze handles. Vases and plant pots were painted using Bunnings paint sample pots mixed with baking soda to create a textured finish, then rubbed with dirt for a distressed, aged appearance. A frame was painted gold and black to achieve a vintage look, and lampshades were also painted to complement the new aesthetic.
The entire renovation took approximately 4-5 nights for the board and batten wall and several weeks for sourcing and purchasing all the items and styling the room. The total cost of the makeover was around $970. The budget breakdown included $150 for the board and batten wall and timber shelf, comprising $57.10 for primed MDF moulding, $39 for two liters of paint, $24 for filler and caulk, and $35 for timber for the shelf. Other expenses included $13.59 for black spray paint, $14.95 for new bronze handles, $352 for a Queen Gas lift bed, $179 for a Queen Linen quilt cover, $40 for two Euro Pillow Covers, $50 for two Natural Gigi washed linen cushions, $9.99 for a Konstanse Striped cushion, $59 for a Norse throw, $15 for a Faux Fern in a concrete pot, $11.50 for black frames, $19 for a Black Candlestick set, $25 for a Faux Olive Tree, $28.90 each for Verve DIY Wall lights, and costs for a faux succulent and thrift store finds. Kasey expressed that her favorite part of the renovation was these small DIY projects and finding creative solutions, particularly enjoying the challenge of transforming items when suitable store-bought options were unavailable. The result is a personalized and stylish master bedroom achieved on a modest budget.
