Bedroom wall art ideas – how to style the blank space over your bed, according to interior designers

Selecting appropriate wall art for the space above a bed presents a common design challenge. Considerations include the size, positioning, and style of the art, all of which are crucial to enhancing the bedroom's overall aesthetic. Rather than settling for conventional choices, exploring unusual and experimental approaches can significantly elevate the design. Interior designers emphasize that bedrooms should function as a retreat, leading to a preference for art that evokes feelings of rest and tranquility, such as abstract landscapes or neutral, textured paintings. However, the definition of 'restful' can be subjective, making it a foundational concept from which to begin the art selection process. Calmness in art does not equate to dullness; instead, it refers to pieces that establish a serene tone suitable for a sleeping environment. This involves selecting artwork with colors that promote peace, similar to choosing calming paint colors for bedrooms, and opting for pieces that convey stillness rather than energy. For instance, a design might feature a contrasting pair of wall art pieces that serve as a focal point without being intrusive. Commissioned pieces, particularly those that are serene and tonal, can envelop a room in warmth and contribute to a personalized collection. Beyond traditional framed art, incorporating three-dimensional elements like wall hangings can introduce texture and form, which two-dimensional pieces often cannot provide. Examples include chain-link style nets or aesthetically arranged wall moldings and thin wooden slats, which add interest and complementary tones without overwhelming the space. Such tactile elements can create impact, especially in neutral bedrooms. Creative approaches to hanging art are also encouraged. A bedroom's individuality can be highlighted through unique design choices, such as using an oversized pegboard as a base for a decorative wall hanging, contrasting lo-fi elements with rich fabric textures. This concept suggests integrating wall art with other decorative elements like wall paneling, murals, wallpaper, or paint effects to create a cohesive and creative display. Deviating from symmetrical art placement can introduce an element of surprise and personality. While centering art above a bed is common, asymmetrical placement can add a subtle, unexpected charm that draws attention without overtly defining the space. The objective is to make the placement feel intentional and slightly subdued, offering a fresh perspective on art integration. Furthermore, art does not always need to be the primary focal point. In some designs, it can serve as a background element, enhancing other features such as modern bedroom furniture. For example, with a four-poster bed, smaller horizontal art pieces or a collection of two to three smaller pieces can complement the bed without overpowering it, ensuring the bed remains the dominant statement. Experimenting with scale is another crucial aspect. While larger wall art is often favored in modern interior design, successfully using smaller pieces can exude confidence and charm. The key to making small art feel appropriate for a large wall is to select pieces with bright frames and bold colors, grounding them with furniture like a mantle or a chair to prevent them from appearing to float. Finally, headboards themselves can function as artistic focal points. A raw-edged walnut board, for instance, can bring natural interest to a bedroom, serving as both furniture and art, and contributing to the overall balance and harmony of colors in the space. Ultimately, there are no strict rules for choosing bedroom wall art beyond selecting pieces that align with the desired atmosphere. The choice often depends on the project and client's preferences, their personal history, or existing art collections. Designers may either build around strong existing collections or educate clients on the importance of building a new one, emphasizing the showcasing of artists who contribute to the world in a beautiful way. #BedroomWallArt #InteriorDesign #HomeDecor #ArtPlacement #CalmingSpaces #TexturalArt #AsymmetricalDesign #HeadboardDesign #BedroomWallArt #InteriorDesign #HomeDecor #ArtPlacement #CalmingSpaces #TexturalArt #AsymmetricalDesign #HeadboardDesign
