How to create an indoor plant wall for your home
The article details the process of creating an indoor preserved moss wall garden, a decorative feature that brings natural aesthetics into a home without requiring traditional plant care. The inspiration for this project came from TODAY anchor Craig Melvin, who encountered a vertical garden at a California hotel and was determined to replicate the concept in his own residence. Despite initial skepticism from his wife, Melvin pursued the idea, which subsequently gained attention from his colleagues and the public after appearing in a People magazine feature on his home.
Deborah Herbertson of the Terrain Store in Westport, Connecticut, a horticulture expert, guided Melvin in creating his moss wall. She explains that these walls, also known as moss walls or indoor gardens, serve as striking art pieces that introduce beauty and nature indoors. A significant advantage is their low maintenance, as preserved moss requires no watering, making it an ideal solution for individuals who may not have a "green thumb" or sufficient time for plant care.
Herbertson provides a step-by-step guide for DIY enthusiasts to create their own preserved moss wall garden. The necessary materials include a shadow box (recommended size: 18x24 inches, 3-5 inches deep), spray foam insulation, a hot glue gun, gloves, and a variety of dried and preserved mosses such as mood moss, reindeer moss, forest pool moss, or sheet moss. Optional decorative elements can include driftwood, moss-covered branches, dried plants or flowers, seed pods, and dried mushrooms.
The process begins with selecting an appropriate shadow box that fits the desired hanging location. If using a branch, it should be securely attached to the inside of the box using a handheld drill and a small screw. Following this, the moss pieces are arranged to form a unique design, with a suggestion to start from a corner and build outwards. The spray foam insulation acts as an adhesive, bonding the moss to the back of the shadow box. Users are advised to follow the instructions on the spray foam can carefully for application.
Emphasis is placed on arranging the moss pieces closely together, utilizing various shades, sizes, and varieties to create a rich, forest-floor effect. Once the surface is covered, a hot glue gun can be used to attach additional decorative items like dried flowers, mushrooms, or seed pods. The finished piece should be allowed to dry overnight before being hung. This method allows individuals to create a lasting, maintenance-free indoor garden that mimics the beauty of nature.
