How to create a plant wall in your garden

A plant wall offers a modern, space-saving, and aesthetically pleasing solution for various garden types, from sprawling lawns to small terraces and high-rise balconies. This guide outlines key considerations for creating a living plant wall, including plant selection, suitable structures, and ongoing care. Gardening expert Michael Perry, also known as Mr Plant Geek, highlights the benefits of plant walls, such as efficient space utilization and keeping plants away from pets. Tim Marshall, Head Gardener at Raby Castle, emphasizes the creative potential for growing flowers, fruits, vegetables, or general greenery, noting that vertical gardens can even be more productive than traditional horizontal layouts. Additionally, plant walls contribute to environmental well-being by reducing noise, acting as thermal insulation, removing air pollutants, and enhancing biodiversity. At its core, a plant wall is a vertical arrangement of plants, flowers, or foliage that grows on or against a wall. Unlike artificial alternatives, a living plant wall features live plants thriving within custom-made panels or structured containers. Their vertical nature frees up floor space, making them ideal for injecting nature and color into even the most confined outdoor areas. To construct a living plant wall, the chosen wall must be waterproofed and robust enough to support the entire structure's weight. Creators can either build their own vertical garden using customizable pots and fixtures or opt for ready-made kits and panels. A crucial aspect to consider is the watering system, which might involve installing a basic circulatory system, often included in custom living wall sets. Ready-made plant wall kits, typically comprising interconnected panels, are an efficient way to achieve a solid, full green wall, effectively eliminating gaps. Michael Perry recommends PlantBox kits for this purpose, particularly for those with limited space. Other pre-made options include modular cell pocket walls with integrated irrigation, which require time to establish, and living wall troughs, which are easy to assemble, come with irrigation, and can accommodate larger plants for an immediate established look. Alternatively, individuals can construct their own plant walls using vertical structures or a combination of wall-mounted pots and containers. This DIY approach allows greater customization in plant variety, layers, and levels. While pre-made living walls can be expensive, building one's own offers cost savings, though it necessitates a substantial supporting structure. Michael Perry notes that DIY structures also allow for more frequent changes. When selecting plants for a living wall, Tim Marshall advises choosing varieties that do not grow too large and are easy to maintain. His recommendations include Euonymus, Festuca, Hakonechloa, Heuchera, Origanum, Sedum, and Stachys. Michael Perry favors ferns and foliage plants for their evergreen nature and diverse shades of green, suggesting succulents as an alternative for those concerned about watering frequency. Maintaining a plant wall requires more intensive care than traditional gardens, involving regular trimming, removal of old leaves, and application of liquid fertilizer. In windy or sunny conditions, plant walls can dry out quickly, necessitating frequent checks of automated irrigation systems. For those seeking further guidance on maximizing small outdoor spaces, advice on window boxes and herb gardens is also available.
