Farmhouse Fixer's Jonathan Knight Shares Why An Open Floor Plan Isn't Always Ideal

Jonathan Knight, known for his work on HGTV's "Farmhouse Fixer," emphasizes the importance of preserving the historical integrity of old farmhouses, which he views as disappearing American treasures. He specifically advises against implementing open-concept designs in homes built in the 1790s, arguing that such renovations clash with the unique characteristics and original purpose of these historic structures. Knight and his business partner, Kristina Crestin, demonstrated this philosophy during a renovation of a New Hampshire farmhouse for a California couple who purchased the property sight unseen. He explained that a modern open-concept layout would be incompatible with the historical details of an 18th-century home. The open floor plan concept gained popularity with mid-century architecture in the 1950s. This design emerged as a departure from traditional layouts, where living rooms were typically formal and separate spaces for entertaining. The open concept aimed to foster family togetherness and prevent isolation, particularly for those in the kitchen during social gatherings. In the last decade, HGTV shows like "Property Brothers" and "Fixer Upper" further popularized open-concept living, with proponents like Jonathan Scott highlighting benefits such as increased natural light and improved family interaction. However, Knight contends that this modern trend is not suitable for all types of homes. His work focuses on renovating old New England farmhouses, which were originally designed for utility and often built around a central chimney for heating and cooking. These homes typically featured smaller, distinct rooms that were gradually added over time. While some homeowners modernize old farmhouses, Knight suggests that preserving their original layout through restoration is often the best approach. He encountered this sentiment when the California owners of the farmhouse expressed concerns about the lower ceilings and smaller living room. Knight advised them that while windows could be added for more light, the house would not achieve a wide-open floor plan. Knight further clarified his stance, stating that the charm of a 1790s house lies precisely in its smaller, individualized rooms. He recommends that those seeking an open-concept living space should consider purchasing a newer home, rather than attempting to alter the fundamental character of a historic property. He believes that imposing a modern open-concept design on an antique farmhouse detracts from its inherent charm and historical significance, which are defined by its original, segmented layout. His perspective highlights a tension between contemporary design preferences and the preservation of architectural heritage, advocating for a respectful approach to historic home renovations. #JonathanKnight #FarmhouseFixer #OpenConcept #HomeRenovation #HistoricHomes #ArchitecturalPreservation #InteriorDesign #HGTV #NewEnglandFarmhouses #JonathanKnight #FarmhouseFixer #OpenConcept #HomeRenovation #HistoricHomes #ArchitecturalPreservation #InteriorDesign #HGTV #NewEnglandFarmhouses
