6 Wallpaper Trends That Are So Outdated, According to Designers

Wallpaper remains a popular design element, but not all styles hold up over time. This article, featuring insights from interior designers Kristina Phillips, Lisa Simopoulos, and Madison Massaro, identifies six wallpaper trends that are now considered outdated and offers advice on avoiding them to maintain a contemporary and elegant home aesthetic. One significant trend to avoid is the use of zig-zag or chevron patterns. While popular in the 2010s, these patterns have become overused and are now perceived as kitschy rather than stylish. Designers recommend opting for more unique patterns to keep a space fresh and modern. Another outdated trend highlighted is oversized floral wallpaper. Although florals can be charming, large, bold blooms tend to visually overwhelm a space, making it feel chaotic rather than sophisticated. For those who appreciate floral designs, a more minimal or less busy pattern is suggested to achieve a refined look. Nature-inspired prints, specifically birch tree designs, are also considered outmoded. These patterns are viewed as overly nostalgic and lack the contemporary appeal desired in modern interiors, suggesting a move towards more current natural motifs or alternative wall treatments. Tiny, indiscernible prints are another style to reconsider. If a wallpaper pattern is so small that its design is not easily recognizable without close inspection, it defeats the purpose of choosing wallpaper over a simple paint application. Designers advocate for patterns that are clear and appreciable from a normal viewing distance. Papered accent walls are also on the decline. While accent walls generally have mixed reviews, the trend of using wallpaper for a single accent wall is increasingly seen as dated. In contrast, wallpapering the ceiling has gained popularity as a way to introduce pattern and interest to a room without the outdated feel of a traditional accent wall. Finally, mixing patterned wallpaper with a busy border is strongly discouraged. Wallpaper borders, especially when combined with intricate wallpaper designs, are reminiscent of outdated decor from past decades, such as the 1980s. Designers advise against using borders altogether, noting their lack of visual enhancement and tendency to make a room appear un-updated. The article also touches on the overuse of geometric wallpaper. While a single wall featuring a funky geometric pattern can create a unique and character-filled space, applying busy geometric patterns to all walls, or even most walls, can be overwhelming and lead to a visually disorienting environment. Keeping geometric patterns to specific areas, such as the ceiling, is suggested for a more balanced and modern approach. #WallpaperTrends #InteriorDesign #HomeDecor #OutdatedDecor #DesignTips #ModernHome #WallTreatments #DesignersAdvice #WallpaperTrends #InteriorDesign #HomeDecor #OutdatedDecor #DesignTips #ModernHome #WallTreatments #DesignersAdvice
