8 Things Experts Would Never Store Under the Bed (and Neither Should You!)

Storing items under the bed is a common practice, particularly in small living spaces, but it comes with several drawbacks according to professional organizers Lisa Zaslow and Alyssa Trosclair. While it might seem like a convenient decluttering solution, experts generally advise against it due to issues such as dust accumulation, difficulty in cleaning, and the tendency to forget what has been stored there. However, an exception is made for small homes or apartments where alternative storage options are limited. Professional organizers strongly recommend against storing items that require frequent access under the bed. Everyday essentials like clothing, handbags, or toiletries become inconvenient to retrieve, making the space impractical for such uses. Instead, these items should be kept in easily accessible areas, preferably between eye level and knee height in closets or other readily reachable storage solutions. Important documents, such as property deeds, insurance policies, birth certificates, and Social Security cards, should never be stored under the bed. This location makes them vulnerable to snooping, insect damage, and potential water damage, especially if the bedroom is near a bathroom. A fireproof and flood-resistant lock box or a safe deposit box at a bank is a much safer alternative. Cardboard boxes are another item to avoid storing under the bed. They attract dust and provide an ideal habitat for various pests like silverfish, cockroaches, moths, and termites due to their paper, adhesive, and corrugated structure. Instead of keeping old packing boxes, they should be recycled, reused by others, or utilized for seasonal clothing storage in secure containers. Old computers and electronics, even if non-functional, should not be kept under the bed. They attract dust and, from a feng shui perspective, can disrupt the peace of the bedroom. Working electronics should be donated, while broken or outdated ones should be taken to computer-recycling centers that offer hard-drive destruction services and proper disposal of hazardous materials. Weapons, including tasers, stun guns, or firearms, are not suitable for under-bed storage. This poses significant safety risks, particularly if children or untrained adults can access them, or if they are mistakenly used during a sleepy state. Firearms should be stored unloaded with a trigger lock in a secured safe, separate from ammunition, often in a basement. Non-lethal self-defense items like cell phones or mace are safer to keep bedside. Photographs, often stored in shoeboxes, are susceptible to damage from insects like cockroaches, moths, and silverfish if kept under the bed due to their paper composition. For conservation, photos should be placed in acid-free albums and stored in cool, dry places. Digitizing and saving them to cloud storage is also a recommended high-tech solution. Posters and art, whether sentimental or valuable, can be damaged by insects, rough handling, humidity, and heat if stored under the bed. It's best to display art on walls to enjoy it. If storage is necessary, items should be kept in a cool, dark place with moderate humidity, such as a closet, or in collector boxes. Lastly, non-canned food items should never be stored under the bed, even in plastic containers, as they can attract rodents, roaches, and ants. Food should be kept in the kitchen or pantry in secure, airtight containers, or stored in freezers or high shelves. Items that can be safely stored under the bed include off-season linens, blankets, extra pillows, shoes, seasonal clothing, decorations, vacation gear, guest items, and gift wrap, provided they are in covered, labeled plastic containers with wheels or felt pads for protection. #UnderBedStorage #HomeOrganization #DeclutterYourLife #StorageSolutions #ProfessionalOrganizers #HomeSafety #PestControl #DocumentStorage #ElectronicsRecycling #UnderBedStorage #HomeOrganization #DeclutterYourLife #StorageSolutions #ProfessionalOrganizers #HomeSafety #PestControl #DocumentStorage #ElectronicsRecycling
