5 Outdated Closet Features You Should Never Add to Your Home, According to Designers

This article highlights five closet features that interior designers consider outdated and provides advice on how to modernize these spaces to enhance functionality and aesthetic appeal. Dallen Russell, a remodeling advisor, Kelly Fitzgerald, a project manager, and Marnie Oursler, the owner and president of Marnie Custom Homes, contribute their expert opinions. One significant outdated feature is the traditional single rod and shelf configuration found in many closets. This setup offers limited organization and fails to maximize vertical space, which is crucial for accommodating modern clothing collections. Contemporary closets now often incorporate multiple hanging rods for different garment types, as well as integrated storage solutions such as built-in jewelry trays and laundry baskets. The trend is moving towards a balanced mix of open and enclosed storage options to cater to diverse needs. Open wire shelving and wire hangers are also identified as outdated elements. While popular in the past for their affordability and ease of installation, wire shelving is now perceived as flimsy and aesthetically unappealing compared to modern designs. Designers recommend replacing wire shelving with sturdy wooden alternatives, which provide a more polished and durable look, along with greater customization possibilities. Similarly, wire hangers are advised against due to their potential to damage clothing over time; sturdier hanger options are preferred. Carpeted closet floors are another feature that is no longer in vogue. These were common in previous decades but are now considered impractical as they tend to trap dust and wear out quickly, requiring frequent cleaning and maintenance. Modern closet designs favor hard flooring surfaces that are easier to clean and maintain, contributing to a fresher and more hygienic environment. Poor lighting, specifically fluorescent or yellow-toned overhead lights, is highlighted as an outdated aspect. Such lighting casts a harsh and unflattering glow, lacking the warmth and clarity of contemporary lighting solutions. The current trend in closet design emphasizes sophisticated, layered lighting schemes. This includes under-shelf lighting, motion sensor lights, and decorative overhead fixtures like statement chandeliers, flush mounts, or sconces. These modern lighting approaches aim to improve visibility, make it easier to select outfits, and enhance the overall luxurious feel of the closet space. Finally, the use of neutral colors in closets is increasingly seen as outdated. Historically, closets were often treated as functional spaces where aesthetics were secondary, leading to a predominance of bland, neutral palettes. However, current design trends encourage embracing bold colors and playful hues in closets, drawing inspiration from colorful kitchens. Two-toned closet designs, mirroring the contrasting perimeter and island colors seen in modern kitchens, are also gaining popularity. This shift reflects a view of closets as integral parts of a home's design, deserving of thoughtful and stylish color choices to create an engaging and personalized space. #ClosetDesign #HomeRenovation #InteriorDesignTrends #StorageSolutions #HomeOrganization #ModernInteriors #LightingDesign #ColorTrends #FunctionalDesign #ClosetDesign #HomeRenovation #InteriorDesignTrends #StorageSolutions #HomeOrganization #ModernInteriors #LightingDesign #ColorTrends #FunctionalDesign
