Minimalist artist retreat with rammed earth walls draws upon 100% renewable resources

The Swoon Art House, located in North Boulder, Colorado, is a minimalist artist retreat designed by Denver-based tres birds workshop. This project transformed a previously undeveloped site into a functional and aesthetically pleasing space, emphasizing environmental stewardship. The design integrates sustainable practices and materials, aiming for 100 percent renewable resource utilization. The retreat is a key component of the Swoon/Boulder Museum Contemporary Art International Artists Residency program. Spanning 7,000 square feet, the Swoon Art House showcases a blend of modern design principles with ancient construction methods. The architectural layout consists of two elongated structures positioned at an angle to each other. These buildings are distinctive for their rounded metal roofs, which provide a contemporary contrast to the substantial 30-inch-thick rammed earth walls. The material for these walls was sourced directly from the site, minimizing transportation impact and integrating the structure with its natural surroundings. The design also incorporates four vertical geothermal wells, which are responsible for powering the building’s heating and cooling systems, thus reducing reliance on conventional energy sources. The first of the two main structures is dedicated to accommodating artists in residence. It features two lofted bedrooms, each with its own bathroom, and a fully equipped kitchen. This arrangement is designed to provide comfortable and self-sufficient living quarters for the resident artists. A glass-walled passageway connects this living area to the second building, which functions as a private art studio. The studio is characterized by energy-conserving windows that allow ample natural light to permeate the space, creating an ideal environment for creative work. Hidden storage solutions are integrated throughout the studio, maintaining a clean and minimalist aesthetic, which is a core design principle of the retreat. The underlying philosophical concept for the architecture, as articulated by tres birds workshop, is based on the symbol of the circle. This symbol, recognized across various cultures, signifies eternity and continuity, lacking a definitive beginning or end. This principle is reflected not only in the physical design and flow of the structures but also in the holistic energy systems employed. The project emphasizes sustainability, artistic function, and a harmonious relationship with the environment. The use of rammed earth and geothermal energy highlights a commitment to eco-friendly building practices, providing a model for sustainable architectural development. #MinimalistDesign #ArtistRetreat #RammedEarth #RenewableResources #GeothermalEnergy #SustainableArchitecture #ColoradoArchitecture #TresBirdsWorkshop #EcoFriendlyBuilding #MinimalistDesign #ArtistRetreat #RammedEarth #RenewableResources #GeothermalEnergy #SustainableArchitecture #ColoradoArchitecture #TresBirdsWorkshop #EcoFriendlyBuilding
