This Interior Designer Created an Entire Home Around a Bright Pink Oven Range
The article details interior designer Ali Budd's renovation of a 4,300-square-foot, five-bedroom, four-and-a-half-bathroom home in Toronto, Canada. The project began with a unique and challenging request from the homeowners: to incorporate a pre-purchased bubble gum-pink oven range into the kitchen. The house, originally a 2000s-era mansion, required a significant update to introduce more depth and character.
Budd approached the kitchen's central pink range by surrounding it with a complementary palette of finishes, including antique brass, limewash, wood, marble, and emerald quartzite. This strategy successfully prevented the space from resembling a "Barbie Dreamhouse" and instead established a sophisticated foundation for the entire home's color scheme. The vibrant pink became a recurring motif, subtly integrated into various rooms in different forms or shades.
In the living room, a saturated mauve was used to create a moody and intimate atmosphere. For the powder room, the clients desired a "whimsical" feel, which Budd achieved by installing a pink quartzite-clad vanity and painting the ceiling in a pale rose, complemented by ethereal wallcovering. Even in the primary bedroom, designed with a warm, neutral palette for tranquility, the pink hue was subtly introduced through a blush-tone rug from Budd's collection for Art + Loom. This soft shade extended into the en suite bathroom, appearing in the trim, vanity, and shower floor, ensuring aesthetic continuity throughout the space.
The renovation emphasized texture and color, aiming for each room to feature a unique and memorable element. The completed interior is presented as a cohesive and special home that harmoniously blends bold choices with refined design. The entry area, for instance, showcases elevated neutrals and an eye-catching sculptural staircase, with arches added to soften modern edges, an abstract plaster installation on the stairs, and curved marble steps at the base. Ali Budd, who founded her design firm in 2010 after studying at Huron College and The International Academy of Design, has since designed numerous residences globally, highlighting her expertise in creating unique and personalized living spaces.
